How Sweetwater County, WY Brings Home the Good Life

One-stop Health Care

As the anchor of Sweetwater County's health-care community, Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County offers services to residents and employs health-care providers in a wide range of specialties, from emergency care and pediatrics to oncology and obstetrics. The hospital’s Sweetwater Regional Cancer Center is the only affiliate partner of the University of Utah's Huntsman Cancer Institute in Wyoming.

Deb Sutton, marketing and public relations director for Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, says a comprehensive range of care is especially important to the county’s rural communities.

“In a rural setting, it becomes difficult to juggle a lot of health-care needs,” she says. “We want to make sure that we cover all those needs. We offer dialysis, for instance. We have a cancer treatment center. We have a urologist. We can provide health care from the beginning to the end of your medical issue. You can start in the emergency room and end up with a specialist. That’s where, as a community hospital and as a regional health-care center, we shine. We take that responsibility very seriously. Everyone here takes that job very seriously.”

Sutton says another reason residents can take comfort in the level of care they receive at MHSC is because the hospital’s more than 500 employees are all members of the community. As a community partner, Sutton says MHSC takes part in a host of events, from health fairs to parades.

“We help to sponsor dozens of events annually across southwestern Wyoming. We also help to educate our community in a myriad of ways, from working with the nursing program at Western Wyoming Community College to basic life support classes and screenings,” she says. “All of our employees, along with their families, are part of the community. We’re neighbors, and we share some of the same issues and health-care concerns as our patients. Like only neighbors can, neighbors care about neighbors.”

State-of-the-art Specialty Care

Sweetwater County residents also have access to a variety of health-care and wellness specialists through New Frontier Imaging, Premier Bone & Joint Centers, Sage View Care Center, Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center, Huxford Chiropractic Clinic, Western Wyoming Community College’s Exercise Science and Wellness Center, Wild Roots holistic health care store, Escape Day Spa & Boutique, Maya Medi-Spa & Salon and Aspen Mountain Medical Center.

The latter is a private, physician-owned hospital that offers care in areas such as orthopaedics, gynecology, pain management, general surgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat) and gastrointestinal disorders. Aspen Mountain Medical Center has recruited top specialists from across the country and has invested heavily in the latest medical technologies.

“The health-care industry is changing rapidly, and we provide a facility where we have the best-in-class health-care providers. We provide rural communities like this access to world-class health-care providers,” says Julie Hunter, a representative for Aspen Mountain Medical Center. “We give the community another option for health care, another choice in health care.”

Hunter says the medical center “spared no expense in developing a facility that has the latest medical technologies.”

“For instance, in our operating rooms, we have pass-through cabinets, which reduce the risk of breaching infection from the scrub nurse opening the door and going in and bringing the tools in,” Hunter says. “Our operating rooms also all use an AirPro system that blows all the germs out into these vacuums that are located in the bottom of the operating room floors. We also have physicians who are not investor-owners of Aspen Mountain Medical Center that choose to perform their surgeries here because their patients gravitate to this state-of-the-art facility.”
