A highlight of living in Sweetwater County is being surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, which constantly beckons with its many recreational opportunities in and on the surrounding mountains, canyons, lakes and rivers.

There are five resorts within a short drive from anywhere in Sweetwater County that offer activities including hiking, horseback riding, many types of boating and fishing for several varieties of trout. In winter, the resorts become wonderlands for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, and, at White Pine Ski Resort, ski trails and lifts.

The resorts offer lodging, though many locals visit for day trips and meals. While all the resorts offer recreation, they also provide opportunities to simply relax.

“We’re very fortunate here to have access to these resorts and the outdoors,†says Alexie Pitsch, who has lived in Rock Springs all of her life and is an agent at Pitsch Insurance. “You can go off for hiking, fishing, four-wheeling – whatever you like to do. We know we’re lucky to live in such a beautiful place with so many opportunities to get out and enjoy it.”

Paradise in Pinedale

On the shore of the vast Fremont Lake, Lakeside Lodge Resort & Marina is a destination for outdoors enthusiasts who enjoy boating, fishing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The marina is hopping in summer with several slips for boaters. Lakeside’s restaurant and its bar and grill, both with views of the lake and mountains, are popular with locals who often visit for dinner.

“Lakeside is such a special place for the community. We’re in the high desert, and here’s this great lake with incredible views and clean water,†says Greg Ptasnik, a managing partner of Lakeside Lodge.

Half Moon Lake Lodge, in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, offers fishing, boating (with an on-site marina), hunting, a restaurant and the Half Moon Saloon. Many people enjoy horseback riding and hiking at Half Moon, which can arrange for overnight and multi-day pack trips. For those looking to have a mountain getaway, the lodge offers eight cozy cabins for rent.

White Pine Ski Resort first opened to skiers in 1940, and today also offers snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing, with equipment rentals. The resort hosts snowmobilers from near and far for Rocky Mountain States Hill Climb Association competitions.

“White Pine is a small resort and perfect for families and for learning,†says Alan Blackburn, a White Pine Ski Resort partner. “People appreciate that White Pine is small, friendly and affordable.”

Gorge-ous Setting

Flaming Gorge Resort, in Dutch John, Utah offers fishing year-round on Flaming Gorge Reservoir and the Green River, and boating, rafting, swimming, scuba diving, hiking and mountain biking in warm weather. The resort’s restaurant is open year-round, and fishing and snowmobiling are popular here in winter.

Moose, osprey and mule deer are among the local wildlife often seen around Red Canyon Lodge, in Flaming Gorge, Utah, where people enjoy hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, boating, fishing, biking and meals at the resort, as well as wintertime activities.

“People in Wyoming love to be in the outdoors,†says Kayla McDonald, business development manager for the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce. “There are so many things to do in this area, and the resorts add to the quality of life for everyone here.â€
