Head for the hills all 12 months of the year at White Pine Ski Resort, 15 miles from Pinedale and less than a two-hour drive north from Rock Springs. Wyoming’s oldest ski area, nestled in the Wind River Mountains, features downhill skiing, Nordic skiing and snowboarding. Winter vacationers can also simply enjoy scenic chairlift rides.

The family-friendly resort is known for its short lines, and features reasonable prices even during the height of skiing season. There are 25 trails of different challenges, and its season typically runs from Thanksgiving to Easter. White Pine also has a two-story cabin for rent that can accommodate up to six people in its two bedrooms, two bathrooms and loft. Rates are $350 from Christmas through early January, and $300 from early January through early April. There are also plenty of accommodations in the town of Pinedale for winter adventurers.

During the winter skiing months, so many people from Rock Springs and Sweetwater County visit the resort on weekends that White Pine schedules shuttles on Saturdays and Sundays to and from Rock Springs High School, Western Wyoming Community College, Family Recreation Center and Farson Mercantile. White Pine Ski Resort also hosts a variety of warmer-month activities, such as horseback riding adventures, downhill mountain biking, hiking and fishing.
