The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well across Southern Idaho, as businesses on the ground – and in the skies – have spent decades creating a culture of innovation. And thanks to strong support from business leaders and communities, along with the growth of major companies, you can find plenty of entrepreneurial and job opportunities in Twin Falls and around the region.

Many entrepreneurs in Twin Falls and Southern Idaho have benefited from the Idaho Small Business Development Center. These include customized training, business planning, loan information and referral, new venture analysis and much more, says Bryan Matsuoka, regional director.

“We do a lot of coaching and consulting, all at no cost, and so can save some time and energy for businesses,” Matsuoka says. “We help prepare projections, for both new and existing businesses, as well as business plans – the things that a lender is going to want to see. We can provide a lot of research and package it up for them.”

Businesses as diverse as Crop Jet Aviation, Action Cycles ’N Sleds, Magic Valley Printing and Microchips ETC have engaged with the center.

The center also is engaged in training programs, which allow it to work with more established companies and industry sectors alongside the startup community it supports. “We’re here to help any kind of business, across all sectors, grow,” Matsuoka says.

Southern Idaho’s business community doesn’t just include ground-based enterprises, either. For 81 years, Reeder Flying Service FBO has been providing multiple services to aircraft operators and in recent years has also built a successful line of helicopter-based services, says Jared VanderKooi, FBO manager.

“We morphed from being a flight school to a crop-dusting operation to a company that provides helicopter operations and ground support for airplanes,” VanderKooi says. “We take care of any needs a private airplane operator might have, from fueling to concierge services like getting rental cars, catering and hotel services. We also handle fueling for some airlines.”

The company now has six helicopters, including a Black Hawk, which VanderKooi says are now all over the country helping with firefighting needs.

At other times of the year, they perform operations like game counts, snow-pack evaluation, and pipeline and powerline patrols. The company has achieved five-star status for its services, which VanderKooi says is important because its team is often the first local presence a visitor, traveling for business, sees.

“We say that the Perrine Bridge is the gateway for tourism for Twin Falls, but Magic Valley Regional Airport is the business gateway,” he says. “Most corporate visitors come through the airport, and so it’s important to us that we do our best to take good care of them.”
