In 2003, the Yadkin Valley earned its milestone designation as North Carolina’s very first federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA). Surry County shares a microclimate remarkably similar to that of the famous Bordeaux region of France, bringing a rich agricultural terroir that serious commercial winemakers seek out.
The rolling hills and gentle slopes do the complex work that high-end winemaking demands: naturally draining excess water, channeling cooling evening breezes and allowing ample airflow between the vines. “We have a good community in Surry County, with great camaraderie,” says Becky Muhlenberg of Haze Gray Vineyards and president of the North Carolina Winegrowers Association.
