For every newcomer to Maury County, there’s a long list of activities to convert you into a local. But there’s no better place to start than at its heart – Muletown (aka Columbia).

Mule Day

Mule Day, hosted in the county seat of Columbia, put the “Mule” in Muletown and put Columbia on the map as the “Mule Capital of the World.” This multiday celebration brings more than 100,000 visitors to the area every April.

Enjoy mule competitions, square dancing, artisans, agricultural exhibitions and the coronation of the Mule Day Queen. No mules? No problem. Mule Day also offers craft vendors, flea markets, Southern fare, the popular “Liar’s Contest” and the Mule Day Parade.

Polk’s Home

Next to Columbia’s historic square sits the James K. Polk Home and Museum. Built in 1816, this preserved Federalstyle brick home is the only surviving private residence of the 11th U.S. president. Knowledgeable guides eagerly share Polk history on guided tours of this National Historic Landmark. You can also visit the kitchen house, gardens, Polk Sisters House and a museum.

Duck River

Don’t be fooled by its gentle currents – the Duck River is no lazy river. Surrounded by bluffs, farmland and trees, the Duck River is a lively ecosystem with more than 200 wildlife species. It’s recognized as the one of the most biodiverse rivers in North America. It’s also a scenic river where you can spend an afternoon canoeing, fishing or floating your cares away.

Staycation

Immerse yourself in the character of Columbia by spending the night in downtown. “All I Have to Do Is Dream” is an intimate, dreamy loft with a rooftop terrace overlooking the beautiful courthouse. It’s perfect for couples, girls’ getaways and retreats. “Soiree on the Square” is a bigger, bolder space designed for gatherings, boutique events and private celebrations. Spot the Sign

You can’t leave Columbia without a stop at TED’s Sporting Goods to shop and to spot the iconic upside-down TED’s sign.

Legend has it that the sign was painted wrong when it originated in 1955. The owners decided it was a happy accident and the rest is history.

Enjoy History

Rippa Villa, a preserved battlefield site, was the stage for the Battle of Spring Hill. The property also offers tours of the Greek Revival-style home and cemetery, and hosts reenactments and events.

Enjoy the Wine

Amber Falls Winery & Cellars, nestled in the scenic rolling hills of Hampshire, has become a destination, producing award-winning wines. Guests enjoy its rustic setting and underground cellar where there’s a wine for almost every taste.

Pleasant Dining

Mt. Pleasant Grille boasts a nostalgic soda shop vibe and elevated Southern food. Diners delight in the soda fountain and house-made ice cream. Menu favorites include the pimento cheese fritters with pepper jelly and the chicken and waffles.

Shop for Goods

Golden Boy Goods in Mount Pleasant is worth a visit. Shoppers like exploring the outdoor and sporting goods, men’s clothing and accessories, and heritage-style goods.
