Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

Macon

The remarkable Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park  near downtown Macon preserves the legacy of American Indian cultures. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can walk 8 miles of trails through forests and wetlands. The paths connect seven ancient earthen mounds constructed some 1,100 years ago. There’s also a Civil War earthworks, built after the Battle of Dunlap Hill in 1864. No entrance fee or pass is required.

Wellston Trail Greenway

Warner Robins

This is a great trail with a fascinating history. In 1994, Tropical Storm Alberto caused Bay Gall Creek in Warner Robins to overflow. After the cleanup, the city began to turn the flood zone into a recreational space. The 2-mile out-and-back paved and woodsy trail runs parallel to the creek. At the greenway’s eastern entrance, Fountain Park offers a playground, basketball courts and picnic tables.

Creekwood Park and Splashpad

Perry

The highlight at this 30-acre park in Perry is the splash pad. Open during the summer and free of charge, it features interactive water cannons, fountains and a giant tipping bucket. Creekwood Park also has pickleball courts, a basketball court, football and softball fields, and a picnic pavilion. Plus, it’s the start of the White Tail Trail, which connects to Perry’s scenic nature trail network along Big Indian Creek.

The Walk at Sandy Run

Warner Robins

Located a short drive south of Center Park at Centerville, this park in Warner Robins lies along Sandy Run Creek. Winding concrete paths give way to elevated boardwalks through the trees, making it a favorite for runners and walkers alike. A large lawn invites backyard games and picnics. There’s also a pavilion and two long slides built on a large earth mound.

Rozar Park

It’s hard to beat the variety of fun-filled activities at this 45-acre outdoor paradise in Perry. Rozar Park features an 18-hole disc golf course, several soccer and baseball fields, a basketball court, picnic pavilion and playgrounds. The walking trail is popular for bird-watching and photography, and two large fishing ponds are stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish.
