Texas State Aquarium Serves on the Frontlines of Marine Conservation
With a bountiful array of marine life around the coastal area of Texas, aquatic biodiversity is a significant part of the state’s natural beauty. Unfortunately, there are many dangers that can threaten these beautiful animals. That’s where the Texas State Aquarium’s Wildlife Rescue Center comes in.

Erika Cavazos, marketing and communications associate at the Texas State Aquarium, explains that when wildlife along the Texas coast is injured, stranded or in danger, the Wildlife Rescue Center provides critical care and rehabilitation.
“Our mission is to respond with expertise, compassion and science, offering medical treatment with the goal of returning animals to the wild whenever possible,” she says. “The aquarium regularly rescues and rehabilitates sea turtles, marine mammals and coastal wildlife, while also educating the public on the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and wildlife conservation.”
The aquarium’s rescue legacy is vast, boasting over 5,000 sea turtle rehabilitations since 1999. Much of this work peaks during seasonal cold-stunning events, which bring in hundreds of endangered turtles each year.
“During sudden cold snaps, sea turtles can become lethargic and unable to swim because they rely on environmental warmth to regulate their body temperature,” Cavazos says.
Without quick intervention, the turtles face severe risks, including pneumonia and physical injuries. In anticipation of these influxes, the aquarium’s operations teams set up emergency stabilization systems ahead of time. Cavazos emphasizes that through these rescue operations, the aquarium successfully protects local wildlife to the benefit of the Coastal Bend community.
Locals in Action
From rescuing cold-stunned sea turtles to rehabilitating birds injured in hurricanes, the aquarium plays an essential role in protecting Texas’ natural world. To get involved, community members can tap into a variety of programs.
The aquarium hosts annual events such as Adopt-A-Beach, where volunteers help remove trash and debris from local coastlines, making beaches safer and healthier for both wildlife and the community. The aquarium also offers volunteer opportunities in a variety of areas that help support animal care, horticulture, guest experiences and conservation efforts.
