Inside Southern Indiana’s Higher Education Engine
Whether they are diving into cutting-edge technology or exploring the rich traditions of the liberal arts, students find a launchpad for their highest ambitions in Southern Indiana’s higher education institutions. Graduates leave not just with degrees, but with direct pipelines into high-growth careers.
Regional powerhouses drive this success: Purdue Polytechnic New Albany offers a high-tech learning environment; Indiana University Southeast provides a deeply community-focused approach to education; Ivy Tech Community College’s Madison and Sellersburg campuses serve as vital local workforce engines; and Hanover College leans into a proud heritage of liberal arts excellence.
Tailored Paths to Success

A defining feature of these institutions is their ability to adapt to individual goals.
Dr. Tyiana Thompson, the vice chancellor of student affairs and marketing at Ivy Tech Community College Sellersburg, emphasizes this tailored approach. “What I love most about Ivy Tech is that we truly meet students where they are,” she says. “Whether someone is a recent high school graduate, a working adult looking to upskill, a parent returning to college or a student pursuing a transfer pathway, Ivy Tech creates opportunities that change lives.”
That freedom to explore isn’t limited to the student body; it extends to the faculty and the broader workforce community as well.
According to Thompson, the college deliberately fosters an environment of innovation, collaboration and community engagement, allowing leaders to develop meaningful partnerships that directly impact students and their employers.
Making an Impact

For alumni like Anne Marie Mattox, now the marketing director for City Wide Facility Solutions in Louisville, her time at Indiana University Southeast (IUS) was a master class in professional discovery.
“IUS helped me discover how creativity and communication can work together to make an impact,” she says. “My coursework exposed me to many aspects of marketing, branding, design and strategic communication, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in marketing.”
The impact of these universities extends far beyond individual career trajectories. Many alumni go on to live and work locally, forging lasting regional relationships that began during their college years.
“IUS gave me opportunities to build meaningful relationships with professors, classmates and community members that helped shape my personal and professional growth,” Mattox notes.
Ultimately, this local retention creates powerful economic and social ripple effects throughout the region.
As Thompson observes regarding Ivy Tech’s role in transitioning students from the classroom to the workforce, the impact extends far beyond our classrooms. “Every graduate who enters the workforce, every student who transfers to a four-year institution and every employer who finds skilled talent through Ivy Tech contributes to the continued growth, prosperity and vitality of Southern Indiana,” she says.

How to Make Your Mark
Whether you are joining the faculty at Purdue Polytechnic, exploring a new career at Ivy Tech, finding your way at Hanover or arriving as an incoming freshman at IUS, an engaging path forward awaits. To get the most out of the experience, campus leaders emphasize active engagement.
For new students, Mattox offers a timeless piece of advice: “Get involved and put yourself out there. Some of the most valuable experiences I had at IUS happened outside the classroom through athletics, student organizations, leadership roles and networking opportunities.”
For incoming faculty and staff, Thompson issues a call to purpose: “Come prepared to make a difference. Ivy Tech faculty are more than instructors; they are mentors, coaches and champions for student success. Our students bring diverse experiences, goals and challenges into the classroom, and faculty have a unique opportunity to help shape not only academic outcomes but also career trajectories and lives.”
