Blackman, Murfreesboro, TN: Modern Suburban Living in West Murfreesboro

By Abby Ford on October 16, 2026

Blackman is a large, peaceful area in West Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with tree-lined streets and modern suburban homes. The historic, unincorporated community is over 200 years old, with roots stretching back to Rutherford County’s earliest settlement. Today, Blackman has grown well beyond its rural beginnings with newer subdivisions and suburban development.

The Blackman community includes numerous residential communities, including Blackman Farm, Berkshire, Blackman Oaks, Puckett Station, Shelton Square and Royal Glen.

Residents enjoy a special combination of calm living and quick access to Nashville and greater Middle Tennessee.

Overall Vibe & Lifestyle

Neighborhoods are made up of professionals, families and retirees, providing a good mix of folks in different life stages. Neighbors are always around to chat, and summers bring backyard parties and the smell of barbecue wafting through the neighborhood.

Safety & Walkability

There is some traffic through the area, depending on the exact subdivision, but Blackman has plenty of maintained sidewalks for pedestrian safety. The area is considered safe, with a low incident rate. Many residents feel perfectly at ease walking around at night, even on busier roads.

Natural & Built Environment

The neighborhood has no city greenways, but the Blackman Community Club maintains the area’s largest public playground, along with basketball and pickleball courts. Individual housing developments also tend to maintain local parks. Shelton Square residents enjoy a gated dog park and a playground, while Puckett Station residents share a playground and community pool.

The largest nearby park is Stones River National Battlefield, with over 570 acres of historic walking trails.

Design & Architecture

Rather than a single cohesive subdivision, Blackman includes numerous residential communities with their own architectural styles. Single-family detached homes dominate, particularly traditional and Craftsman-inspired two-story designs. Brick exteriors are common, often paired with vinyl siding, stone accents, covered entryways and attached two-car garages.

Higher-priced properties introduce more architectural variation, but overall, buyers can expect contemporary suburban housing.
