Regional Groups Promote Greater Baltimore, MD’s Advantages

Two regional economic development organizations are working to enhance economic competitiveness in the six-county Greater Baltimore region.

Greater Baltimore, which encompasses Baltimore City and Baltimore County, as well as the surrounding area of Anne Arundel, Carroll, Cecil, Harford and Howard counties, is home to two regional groups working to enhance the economic vitality of six-county region. The Greater Baltimore Committee acts as the leading voice for business and civic leaders on issues related to economic growth, job creation, workforce development, transportation and quality of life.

“We try to anticipate the challenges we are going to face, educate people about those and develop solutions to what those might be moving forward,” says Don Fry, president and CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee.

Some of the organization’s top initiatives include strengthening competitiveness for job growth in the region and the state, improving opportunities for mass transit, and bolstering incentives and tax credits to bring more startup firms and angel investors to Greater Baltimore. The committee is also heading up the region’s participation in the Brookings Institution’s Global Cities Initiative, which focuses on increasing export opportunities for small- and medium-sized businesses.

“We have a significant opportunity for future growth in the export trade area and for companies in the Baltimore region to expand their markets and see growth from that perspective,” Fry says. Promoting Greater Baltimore as a world-class market for living, working, learning and investing is the mission of the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore (EAGB), a nonprofit partnership of regional business executives, elected government officials and higher education leaders working together to promote economic development, job creation, and business investment across the region.

The EAGB conducts high-level, non-partisan analysis and research to identify key trends and market strengths to help companies better understand opportunities to grow in the region. “Our unique partnership of government, higher education and industry leaders allow us to convene the right people to drive collaboration, address challenges, recognize successes, pool marketing resources and take strategic action to promote the region’s many strengths as a place to locate and grow a business,” says Tom Sadowski, president and CEO of the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore.

“By taking care of our existing companies, celebrating their successes and having them share their positive experiences here in the Greater Baltimore marketplace, we are able to attract other companies, talent and new investment.”
