Take Keyla Cabret-Lewis, for example. She started with the company as a high school intern back in 1995, working just two hours a day after school for its employment services division. She continued as an intern through high school and while she was working toward a bachelor’s degree at Columbus State University.
“After graduation, immediately, I was asked to come on full-time as a corporate recruiter in the space that I was in, and the rest is history,” she says.
After working in a recruiting position for about 15 years, she assumed the role of HR business partner until she was named the director of diversity, equity and inclusion in early 2021.
“I’m so happy doing that,” she says of her current position. But happy with her job and employer isn’t new for Cabret-Lewis.

“Most people stay in an organization that provides them with opportunity, and sometimes, that road ends faster than others … At every point in my career where I felt stagnant or ready for something else, I’ve been challenged with something else,” she says. “I’ve not needed the push of something new because I’ve been able to get that within this company.”
One thing Cabret-Lewis says she and her colleagues appreciate is the mentorship provided at Aflac.
“I think we’ve set up our culture for that to occur naturally, and that’s a benefit that — it’s not a scripted benefit, so you can’t put a number on it — but it’s one that’s critical to the growth of an employee,” she says.
