Worcester, MA, is an area that’s known for its family-friendly vibe, with plenty of activities, attractions, and things for kids of all ages to do any time of year. Whether you’re trying to pass the time on summer break (where you can have a great time and learn something!) or looking for a unique activity to fill your weekend, here are five fun things to do in Worcester:

1. EcoTarium

Residents have always valued nature. With roots dating back to 1825, the EcoTarium has indoor and outdoor exhibits and activities geared toward learning and exploration. The natural science museum hosts animals like otters, eagles and monkeys who are rehabilitating or can’t be released in the wild. Highlights include The Arctic Next Door, which explores New England’s wild weather; Nature Explore, which gets families outside to dig, build, climb, and see wildlife; and City Science, which lets visitors explore the science of where they live.

2. Worcester Art Museum

Housing more than 38,000 artworks that range from antiquity to contemporary art, the Worcester Art Museum (WAM) is full of ways to engage the family. In addition to having one of the country’s largest collections of arms and armory, it has works by Monet, Gauguin, Rembrandt, Jackson Pollock, and many others. The WAM offers kids crafts, art carts, scavenger hunts, tours, and other activities intentionally designed to help kids tap into their own sense of creativity.

3. Southwick’s Zoo

Spanning over 200 acres, Southwick’s Zoo is a privately owned zoo with an adjoining restaurant that is ideal for animal lovers. The exhibits, including big cats, primates, and birds, are just the beginning: The zoo also has a chair lift ride that glides over the zoo, a petting zoo, animal trainer demos, animal encounters, and a “mine” where visitors can pan for gold. For kids who want to explore more, there are seasonal day camps.

4. Old Sturbridge Village

This is the largest living history museum in the country. Re-creating what life in New England was like in the 1790s through the 1830s, Old Sturbridge Village features a working farm, three water-powered mills, and 59 historic buildings. Costumed historic interpreters are on hand to demonstrate the arts, crafts, and lifestyle, teaching even the littlest history buffs what life was like in the 19th century.

5. New England Botanic Garden

Overlooking the Wachusett Reservoir and Mount Wachusett, the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill sprawls over 171 acres of carefully planned gardens and cultivated edible, ornamental, and native New England plants. There are trails throughout that are fun for families to explore, but the garden also has an exciting schedule of programs and events, including family tie-dying classes and musical concerts.
