EMU, UPS, private firms head the list
Go Eagles! Eastern Michigan University is the largest employer in Ypsilanti with 1,400 staffers, while several other organizations and private companies also contribute to the city’s economy. Here are some examples:
Eastern Michigan University
With seven colleges, Eastern Michigan University employs 700 faculty members and 700 other staffers who accommodate an enrollment of 23,000 students. EMU was founded in 1849, has 21 varsity sports and offers more than 200 undergraduate majors and minors along with 170 graduate programs.
Ypsilanti Public Schools
With a motto of “Cradle-to-Career,” Ypsilanti Public Schools features several academic programs, including providing tablets to every student at Ypsilanti Community Middle School and Washtenaw International Middle Academy. YPS also has college credit partnerships with Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College.
Lincoln Consolidated Schools
Officials utilize data-driven school improvement plans to ensure continued student growth and increased student achievement at all Lincoln Consolidated Schools, a district that features three elementary, one middle and one high school along with an early childhood center. Administrators apply for many state and federal grants to keep improving LCS.
Providing software solutions for nearly 50 years is Cogitate Incorporated, a company of about 200 employees who subscribe to the motto “thinking things through so you don’t have to.” The company offers customer support and creates software and apps in areas such as fund accounting, utility billing, cloud backups and mobile timecards.
Potter Architectural Services
Serving a broad spectrum of clients is Potter Architectural Services, a company that employs top-level design and engineering teams. PAS provides architectural services for the healthcare industry in areas such as hospital renovations, medical office buildings and nursing home construction, along with projects for education and commercial facilities.
For more than 50 years, McVey Enterprises has produced health and wellness organic vitamins from its headquarters on N. Adams Street. The products are aimed at advocates of alternative and holistic health, and all vitamins feature nutrients that promote strong bones and growth. The company’s most popular line is Nutrilite.
United Parcel Service Customer Center
More than 200 employees work at the UPS Customer Center in Ypsilanti, assisting customers with any UPS air, ground or international package shipments. Available to customers in the center are packaging supplies and packaging services that help eliminate handwritten forms as well as create individual secure electronic address books.
