The Wilkes Regional Medical Center expanded their Emergency Department.

Wilkes County residents have several resources available when it comes to health and wellness, including clinics, specialists, a recently expanded fitness center, and a program designed for expectant and new mothers.

Medical Clinics

Residents receive quick, comprehensive care at the five medical clinics serving the county: Boomer, Clingman, Mountain View, Rock Creek and West Wilkes. The clinics are conveniently located throughout the largely rural community, so Wilkes County residents don’t have to travel far for medical treatment.

Boomer, Clingman and Mountain View medical clinics are operated by Hugh Chatham Family Medicine, a department of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. While the Clingman facility treats only adults, physicians at the Boomer and Mountain View clinics see patients of all ages. Patients who are acutely ill or injured are usually seen the same day they request care.

Rock Creek Family Medicine and Urgent Care and West Wilkes Family Medicine are operated by Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro. Both the Rock Creek facility, which is also located in North Wilkesboro, and the West Wilkes clinic in Ferguson’s Mount Pleasant community accept appointments and walk-ins.

Holistic Medicine

The Holistic Medical Clinic of the Carolinas has as its mission to provide care and services for the mind, body and spirit throughout the life cycle. The practice integrates conventional and complementary therapies along with education to both treat disease and optimize health. Services include lifestyle education, alternative chemotherapy, bio-identical hormone therapy, massage therapy, colonic irrigation, acupuncture, naturopathic medicine, conventional medicine, sports medicine, and heavy metal chelation.

Orthopaedic Specialists of Wilkes

In North Wilkesboro’s West Park Center Medical Complex, the Orthopaedic Specialists of Wilkes facility is affiliated with the Wilkes Regional Medical Center. The office has two orthopedic surgeons (Matthew Pifer, M.D., and Steven R. Anderson, M.D), a certified physician’s assistant and a certified family nurse practitioner.

Wilkes Family YMCA Expansion

The Wilkes Family YMCA’s $1 million, 8,800-square-foot expansion has more than doubled the size of its group exercise and wellness areas, which means more fitness equipment for members to enjoy – including a new strength training line and several new cardio pieces – and a higher participant capacity for  exercise classes. Due to the added square footage, the YMCA now has space for a personal training studio and a place for teen and youth programs. The YMCA also has constructed a KaBoom! Playground that’s open to members and non-members alike.

Text4Baby Program

The Text4Baby program, a product of the National Happy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, is available to pregnant women and new mothers through the Wilkes County Health Department. Those participating in the cost-free program receive text messages three times a week with information to help them navigate pregnancy and their child’s first year. A free Text4Baby mobile app includes health and safety tips as well as fun, interactive features like quizzes. Through the app or texts, users can also choose to receive reminders for doctor’s appointments.
