Attractions include City Lake Park, nightspots, butterfly farm.
Welcome to High Point, a city that enjoys a long history of quality furniture making and still has more than 40 retail furniture outlets today. Besides shopping at the outlet stores, here are some things to do in High Point:
Head to the Park
One of the most popular recreation destinations in the region is High Point City Lake Park, which has attractions like two playgrounds, miniature golf course, excursion boat, carousel, large swimming pool and train. Kayaks, canoes and paddleboats can be rented for the 540-acre lake, and boating and fishing opportunities are also available.
Step up to the plate and savor the cuisine scene in High Point, with several independent restaurants and multiple ethnicities represented. Popular dining hotspots include Alex’s House, Austin’s, Blind Pig, Blue Rock Pizza & Tap, Blue Zucchini, Dog House Restaurant, Dragon City, Furniture City Grill, Ham’s, Little Tokyo, Mi Pueblo, Sanibel’s Seafood and Wilk’s Skillet.
Catch Some Fish
If you like to fish, Oak Hollow Lake Park & Marina (pictured) is a perfect place to enjoy this relaxing pastime. The marina has a variety of fishing tackle and weights made locally, and a wide range of bait is available from live minnows to red worms, night crawlers and chicken livers. Snacks, drinks, coolers and ice can also be purchased.
View the Chest
Perhaps the city’s most unusual outdoor landmark is the World’s Largest Chest of Drawers, which stands 38 feet tall and is adorned with two large socks hanging from the drawers. The socks symbolize the region’s successful hosiery industry, and the chest goes along with the city’s nickname of “Home Furnishings Capital of the World.”
High Point is home to three universities, so it stands to reason that the city offers a good array of nighttime destinations that college students and anyone else can enjoy. Some of the most popular after-dark venues are After Hours, Bottoms Up Bar & Billiards, Rixster Grill and The Brewer’s Kettle.
It’s easy to find fun things to do in High Point, with several events scheduled throughout the year. Top attractions include a Banff Mountain Film Festival, Arts Splash Outdoor Concert Series, Village Fair at Mendenhall Plantation, Taste of the Town and a highly popular John Coltrane International Jazz & Blues Festival.
Spread Your Wings
The kids and grandkids will be fascinated with the goings-on at All-A-Flutter Butterfly Farm, where hundreds of butterflies can be seen and experienced inside an onsite Flight House. Catching and feeding Monarch butterflies is encouraged, and also on the grounds for the kids is a climbing wall, slides and a crawl-through tunnel.
Have a Brewski or Two
A good selection of home brews and some wine options are available to customers who frequent Brown Truck Brewery, a small taproom with a friendly staff. Live music is available on the outdoor patio on many nights, and the food menu changes frequently to prevent boredom. BTW: Their most popular microbrew is the Belgian Honey Blonde.
