“We have a great trail system in our area,” says Natalie Eidson, who has been living in Elkin, NC, since 2013. “They go all the way from beginner and stroller-friendly to more strenuous for more adventurous people.”
There are also fantastic parks, like Elkin Municipal Park and Crater Park, and those who love being out on the water can enjoy several activities on the Yadkin River.
2. The Arts
The arts bring color, creativity and personality to Elkin. Not only is it home to several murals and galleries, but it also boasts the Foothills Arts Center. Foothills is all about arts education and entertainment, offering things like classes, workshops, theater productions and exhibits. The building is temporarily closed for renovations, but operations continue around town.

“We have some new pottery studios going in downtown, and you can take classes to learn how to do that or just drop in on a single class and make something,” says Mitzi Settle, who has been living in Elkin, NC, for more than 20 years.
Also rounding out the arts lineup is the Yadkin Valley Fiber Center and Foothills School of Violin Making.
3. Vineyards and Breweries
Elkin has an incredible collection of vineyards and breweries, perfect for perusing and gathering with friends and family.
“I love to visit all the wineries in our area with friends,” Eidson says. “It’s easy to hit a few in a day because they’re close to downtown Elkin. Elkin Vine Line, a wine shuttle system, makes it easy to get to different parts of the wine region.”
If beer and breweries are more your vibe, there are plenty of those to choose from, as well.
“My husband and I own the Elkin RailYard, which we opened in 2023,” Settle says. “We’ve got live music and food trucks, and overall, it’s a fun place to hang out with families, kids and dogs.”
A European-style beer garden, nestled in a grove of trees, makes for an incredible environment to unwind after work or on the weekend.
4. Proximity
While living in Elkin, NC, provides residents with plenty of amenities, its location is convenient for quick day trips to nearby cities like Charlotte and Winston-Salem.

“My grandfather-in-law always says you can get anywhere in the world from Elkin,” Eidson says. “Most of my best friends from college live in Charlotte. It’s so close and easy to go visit, especially since we’re right next to Highway 77, and there’s never traffic.”
Likewise, people from nearby cities are beginning to explore Elkin, stopping by for a weekend or longer to enjoy all the town has to offer.
5. Schools
Elkin City Schools is a big part of why many families find so much value in living in Elkin, NC. In fact, the district is currently ranked No. 7 on Niche’s list of 2025 Best School Districts in North Carolina. Not only do students score well on state testing, but the student-to-teacher ratio is an impressive 14 to 1, which helps ensure students receive the best education possible.

“The schools are really active in our community,” Eidson says. “And the whole community gets involved.”

Opportunities to volunteer are plentiful, from assisting teachers to organizing events or mentoring students, and with such a close-knit, small-town environment, everyone pitches in to make sure students have enriching educational experiences.

From boutiques to coffee shops to restaurants, Elkin’s downtown is bustling with energy and entertainment.
“There’s a great little bar scene,” Settle says. “We have some nice cocktail bars and restaurants downtown, which make it super fun to hang out and meet new people.”
Entertainment is also easy to find, especially if live music is your jam. Explore Elkin sponsors a live music series every Friday during warmer months, and The Reeves Theater hosts a carousel of local and touring shows throughout the year.
“No matter where you go in Elkin from April through October, there’s going to be live music somewhere,” Eidson says. “You never know what you’re going to get, but it’s always going to be something good.”
Additionally, there are many fun events that take place downtown throughout the year, such as Light Up Elkin, Elkin Farmers Market, Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival and Milltown Get Down music festival.
