When it comes to the best golf courses in North Carolina, the city of Smithfield and surrounding Johnston County keep golfers on their tees. With several good public and private venues to choose from, Smithfield draws many golfers for year-round action. Here a look at some of the golf courses near Smithfield:

Country Club of Johnston County

This is the only golf course physically in Smithfield. The 18-hole, 6,630-yard layout opened in 1967 and is known for its well-manicured bermuda grass fairways and greens. Fees are $30 on weekdays, $42 on weekends and holidays, and $25 for seniors during the week. Country Club of Johnston County is a public venue.

Cardinal Country Club

Designed by noted architect John Nubin, Cardinal CC is a public 18-hole course in Selma. It opened in 1969 and spans 6,602 yards, and features tree-lined fairways, several water hazards and many challenging bunkers.

The Neuse Golf Club

The 18-hole public venue was designed by John LaFoy, and The Neuse has been the recipient of several accolades over the years. In fact, Golf Digest voted it among the Top 5 Golf Courses in North Carolina for course conditions.

Reedy Creek Golf Course

This destination in Four Oaks has been welcoming golfers since 1988. Gene Hamm designed the course to feature championship bermuda greens, and the entire 6,426-yard venue is set among rolling farmland. Golf Digest rates Reedy Creek a “Must Place to Play” in North Carolina.

St. Augustine’s College Golf Course

This cozy course in Garner is a nine-hole, par 36 layout that first opened in 1958. St. Augustine’s is public and spans 3,001 yards, and is known for its pleasing scenery.
