Whether you are looking for a high-rise city view or a quiet cul-de-sac, exploring the neighborhoods in the Dayton, OH, region reveals a cost of living and quality of life that is hard to match.
Ahead, two locals share why they chose the Dayton area, what makes their neighborhoods special and why they love calling them home.

Eva Buttacavoli
The Contemporary
Eva Buttacavoli lives with her husband in a downtown Dayton condo. The New York native is the director of advancement and transition at The Contemporary, a nonprofit art gallery in the heart of the city. Buttacavoli says living near her workplace was a major factor in selecting a home.
For Chuck Edmonson, director of marketing and member engagement for the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, the decision to settle in the southern suburb of Springboro was made with a future family in mind.
“Proximity to work and the quality of the schools were the two big factors when we were deciding where to build our first house right after we got married,” he says. “We’ve lived in Springboro for almost 30 years. We’re in our second house, as we outgrew the first one.”
“When we want to see friends outside of downtown, visit another MetroPark or enjoy another activity outside downtown, it’s usually no more than a 20-minute drive.”

Built-In Amenities: Parks, Trails and Walkability
Dynamic lifestyle amenities also drew Buttacavoli downtown, which serves as the region’s cultural hub – home to major performing arts venues, charming local businesses and vibrant public green spaces.
“We live in a relaxed environment that’s walkable to arts and entertainment, with a community of downtown residents who are supportive of downtown and each other,” Buttacavoli says.
Not only do Buttacavoli and her husband have Cooper Park right across from their condo, but they’re also just steps away from RiverScape MetroPark. Through Five Rivers MetroParks, they can easily access the largest paved, off-street multiuse trail network in the entire country.

Edmonson adds that his family can access nature quickly and conveniently from their home.
“Springboro has a number of beautiful parks and trails, and so does our neighborhood,” he says.

Walkability is one of the features Buttacavoli and her husband enjoy most about where they live.
They mostly walk to get to their favorite destinations; however, they also like having access to public transit. “It’s not uncommon for us to take the bus to places outside of downtown, especially The Flyer – a free shuttle service – to experience restaurants that are just outside the city center,” she says.

Easy Rides and Short Regional Commutes
Longer trips across the Miami Valley are also a breeze. Major highway corridors like Interstate 75 and U.S. Route 35 both run directly through downtown Dayton.
“When we want to see friends outside of downtown, visit another MetroPark or enjoy another activity outside downtown, it’s usually no more than a 20-minute drive,” Buttacavoli says.
Edmonson also praises Dayton’s low commute times, noting he can drive to and from his office in downtown Dayton quickly from his Springboro residence. “If traffic cooperates, I can be door to door in a little less than 30 minutes,” he says.
This seamless highway connectivity makes exploring the entire Dayton region quick and effortless, allowing residents to enjoy the best of both worlds every day.

A Strong Sense of Community Across the Valley
Regardless of which environment families choose across the region, they all share a strong, welcoming sense of community. Edmonson notes that his neighbors are among the things he likes most about his suburban block.
“We’ve got friendly residents, great schools, a reasonable cost of living compared to other neighboring communities and fantastic amenities,” he says.

Buttacavoli and her husband equally appreciate the tight-knit connection they feel in their urban footprint.
“We enjoy living around other people who appreciate urban living and seeing those people out and about all the time,” she says. “Given the size of our community, we are fortunate to have the rich and diverse cultural offerings that anyone and everyone in the Miami Valley can benefit from.”
