Aiken Regional Medical Centers has come a long way since it opened in 1917 as the Aiken Hospital and Relief Society. Today, it boasts 273 licensed beds and offers a comprehensive array of services to the region.

The hospital is one of Western South Carolina‘s largest employers, with more than 1,200 associates, a medical staff of more than 200 covering the gamut of specialties, and more than 100 volunteers assisting with services.

Reaching Higher

“We relentlessly pursue high quality care, exceptional patient experience and uncompromised patient safety,” says Matt Merrifield, CEO. “That is who we are as an organization.”

U.S. News & World Report recently recognized Aiken Regional as a high-performing hospital, well above the national average in both heart failure and stroke.

“We’ve received a number of American Heart Association designations and awards for not just offering this care, but performing at a very high level,” Merrifield says.

The hospital also has strong programs in oncology, orthopedics and psychiatry.

“We are able to care for the whole person here on one campus without sending them somewhere else, and our focus is on addressing the complexity of care,” he says.

Future-Focused

The hospital is also addressing access to care.

“This doesn’t just mean adding new access points,” Merrifield says, “although we are doing some of that. It’s also making sure that if you need us, we’re able to get you in quickly, effectively, efficiently and get your needs taken care of without significant waits.”

A freestanding emergency department in the Sweetwater area in North Augusta has been a tremendous success.

“It was the first acute care offering in that community,” Merrifield says, “and it is an extension of us, a full-service board-certified emergency department with emergency physicians. Sweetwater is a great example of how we are adding access points where a community is underserved.”

Merrifield further notes that Aiken Regional has taken steps toward becoming a teaching hospital, with residency programs in internal and family medicine.

“We’re training the best and the brightest in these programs that are going to pay dividends to this community for years to come,” he says, adding that the hospital expects to retain many of these physicians.

Committed to Community

The hospital’s business and industry clinic program partners with area businesses to address their needs, from placing one of their nurses on-site to making sure the company’s employees have quick access when they need care.

“It’s not a one size fits all,” Merrifield says. “We are able to be nimble in what we offer local businesses. We can meet them where they are and align the resources we have with their needs.”

The hospital also works with nonprofits in the area to impact the root causes of community health needs, like food insecurity and transportation challenges.

Merrifield says providing health and wellness resources is also important, beginning with the hospital team itself.

“I think about our expectations for our entire team to make sure their health and wellness priorities are in order,” Merrifield says. “That starts with making sure they take care of themselves, whatever that means for them.”

The hospital offers several classes, programs and resources that are open to the entire community, including employees and their families.

“If we’re not making sure our team is making their own physical and mental health a priority, we’re never going to be able to be what we need to be for this community,” Merrifield says.

He also shares that he and his leadership team are committed to being consistently involved in the community, offering local groups financial support and dedicating their time.

“We’re really focused on that time piece,” he says. “It’s great to show our monetary support, but it can make an even larger impact when we are able to work alongside community members and hear their feedback. Keeping our ear to the community is so important. If we don’t listen to what their needs are, and shift what we are doing to meet those needs, then we’re not maximizing what we can offer to them.”

Wellness Tips

A key to living a healthy life is making wellness a priority. Dr. Tiffani Thomas, family medicine physician and family medicine program director at Aiken Regional Medical Centers, offers these ideas on ways people can better their health.

“By following these health tips, you can lead a more vibrant and fulfilling life,” Thomas says. “Remember, investing in your health is an investment in your future. Stay active, stay nourished and stay connected.”

1. Stay Active With Regular Exercise

Follow the American Heart Association’s recommendation of getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week. Whether it’s walking, biking, hiking or swimming, South Carolina offers numerous opportunities to stay active while also enjoying the outdoors.

2. Prioritize Your Mental Health

Mental well-being is as important as physical health. Engage in stress-relieving activities like meditation, yoga or spending time in nature. Connect with friends, family or support groups to nurture your social connections and emotional resilience.

3. Prioritize Quality Sleep

Adequate sleep is essential for your body’s recovery and overall health. Strive for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night. Create a comfortable sleep environment, establish a consistent sleep schedule and limit screen time before bed.

4. Schedule Regular Checkups

Don’t neglect your health checkups. Regular visits to your health care provider can help with detection and management of health issues early on. Preventative care ensures you’re on the right track for a healthier future.

5. Hydrate With Water

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain energy levels, aid digestion and promote overall wellness. Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated while on the go.

6. Embrace a Balanced Diet

Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats into your meals. Limit processed foods, sugary snacks and excessive salt intake for optimal health.
