Opening its doors in 2023, J. Danforth Mercantile in Blount County, Tennessee, is a collective market offering various products, from grab-and-go food to gourmet groceries, homeware, trendy clothing and specialty gifts.
The market is located at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in downtown Maryville, nearby a bookstore, brewery and several restaurants – all of which have set up shop in the area in recent years, too.

What inspired you to open J. Danforth Mercantile?
I’ve worked with local makers and artisans in Blount County for over 10 years. I love the sense of community here and I envisioned a place reminiscent of the old days, with one spot in town to get everything you needed. J. Danforth Mercantile became this unique shopping experience in a space where people could shop local artists’ goods all year round, not just at seasonal markets, pick up something for dinner and have a conversation with their neighbors.

How has the community supported your business?
Our success is evidence of the wonderful group of artisans who bring their goods and the community that regularly shops. Everyone has been incredibly positive and supportive, and we couldn’t have done it without them.
What are the benefits of your store’s location in downtown Maryville?
Downtown Maryville is a walkable community. There are also many special events, from the weekend farmers market to holiday markets and Summer on Broadway. These events draw the community in and boost our business.

Can you tell us about the business community in downtown Maryville?
We believe in community over competition. A group of dedicated business owners meets quarterly to discuss upcoming events, successes and challenges, allowing us to support each other and provide better customer service.
What advice would you give someone looking to start a business in Blount County?
We have great resources in Blount County like the Sky City Entrepreneur Center and the Blount Partnership (which includes the Blount County Chamber of Commerce) that offer support and host many events. The Downtown Maryville Alliance is a great resource, too. Getting in touch
with these organizations is the best place to start.
How does Maryville’s lifestyle contribute to your work-life balance?
There’s an outstanding work-life balance. The area’s walkability is fantastic, and we are an outdoor-oriented community. I know my staff and many customers personally. We’re all very tight-knit.
