Maury Regional Health Launches Expansion and Improvement Plans

Maury Regional Health has launched one of the most dynamic expansion and improvement campaigns in the history of the Columbia-based health system, and it is sure to make a positive health and wellness impact for the entire region. 

In late 2023, the organization launched a $115 million facilities and services plan, which will increase access and enhance patient experience in various areas of the flagship hospital, Maury Regional Medical Center. The 255-bed facility in Columbia is the largest hospital located between Nashville and Huntsville, Alabama.

“It is the first major construction project here in approximately 20 years,” says Dr. Martin Chaney, Maury Regional Health CEO.

As the population growth in Maury County is soaring – up nearly 37% from 2010 to 2022 – Maury Regional Health is where the community elects to receive leading-edge treatment for their medical needs.

“As more patients continue to choose Maury Regional Health for their care, we are recruiting physicians to support growing areas of general and specialty care, offering additional services and expanding our facilities to meet the changing needs of our community,” Chaney says. 

Wold Architects & Engineers is the design firm and Turner Construction is serving as the contractor for most of the projects.

Changes taking place include:

1. Outpatient Pavilion 

At the Pavilion, a new outpatient surgery center will be added with six surgical and procedural suites as well as a sterile processing department to serve the surgery centers on the first and third floors. The Women’s Center will undergo renovation and relocate from the first floor to the second floor of the Pavilion.

2. Emergency Department

Changes in the Emergency Department include renovations resulting in the addition of a third trauma room and 10 treatment rooms for a total of 48 spaces with added privacy. Other features will incorporate newly designed patient registration and primary triage areas, plus enhanced security features and a reconfigured waiting area with new furniture. Also, the Emergency Department will be home to a completely redesigned behavioral health unit for patients awaiting transfer.

3. Front Interior of Hospital and Heart Center

The entrance area will be modernized with key services moving closer to the main entrance, including patient registration, outpatient pharmacy, a cafe and a gift shop. The information desk will remain in the same area with some new changes.

“In addition to improving access for patients and visitors, moving these services closer to the main entrance opens space for future expansion of our Heart Center as the number of cardiologists on our medical staff continues to grow,” Chaney says.

The Heart Center, which treats an increasing patient population, recently upgraded two cardiac catheterization labs in 2022. The center will benefit from expanded room for procedural, post-procedure recovery and cardiac diagnostic services in space once occupied by cardiac rehabilitation and a cafe on the first floor.

4. Upgraded Front Exterior and Traffic Flow

In addition to the exciting new developments happening inside the hospital, Maury Regional Medical Center will soon receive a modern front exterior upgrade and a welcoming main hospital entrance. 

Also, a new safety feature on the drawing board is a drive-thru lane to separate traffic from the drop-off location in front of the hospital, as well as a state-of-the-art security system to better protect patients and the health care team.

Parking will be reconfigured to add 189 spaces on the campus. People will be able to enjoy the outdoors and exercise on the new walking paths and improved green spaces, which are all a part of the front entrance exterior enhancements. 

5. Other Projects

The dining room/cafe space was recently updated primarily with funds provided by Morrison Healthcare, a longtime provider of hospital food services. 

Other projects on the finished list are the renovation of a new vascular operating and procedural room in surgery and Maury Regional Medical Group practices. 

That includes primary care offices in Spring Hill, Lewisburg and Waynesboro, plus OB-GYN and pulmonary practices in Columbia. 

In nearby Lawrence County,a new health park located on Highway 43 in north Lawrenceburg has a 2025 target completion date. Primary care and a physician specialist clinic will be available.
