Medical staff use state of the art equipment for surgery in The Heart Center at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, Tennessee. MRMC provides interventional cath lab procedures such as angioplasty and stenting, and cardiothoracic surgery through a partnership with Vanderbilt Heart.

As Maury County continues to grow and thrive, so do its high-quality medical options. From large hospitals and emergency rooms to long-term care settings and outpatient clinics, the county’s network of health-care providers is expanding and enhancing its services to keep pace with the needs of the community.

Healthy at Heart

At the forefront of acute-care providers is Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC), which is consistently recognized for its top-notch, cost-effective care. Among recent advances, MRMC received full Chest Pain Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. The medical center’s team of caregivers work in concert with its ER and ambulance services to reduce the time it takes to provide diagnosis and treatment of chest-pain symptoms that may signal a heart attack.

Leading-edge specialty care offered by MRMC also includes its cancer center, one of four Tennessee medical centers accredited in radiation oncology. It offers radiation therapy in Spring Hill and Columbia. Through its Women’s Center, Maury Regional is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology and accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers by the American College of Surgeons.

“Since opening in 2003, the Women’s Center has continued to advance the technology and services available to women in our region,” says Dana Salters, director of infusion/women’s imaging for MRMC. “From digital mammography and breast MRI to detect cancer in its earliest stages to survivor-support services, we help them navigate the journey through breast cancer and treatment.”

The hospital strives to make these vital services available to as many community members as possible.

“We serve many women who are financially challenged,” Salters says. “Through the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation, we are able to provide screening mammograms, wigs, camisoles, lymphedema garments and head coverings for our patients. We are grateful for the generosity of our community and its support of the Women’s Center Fund and Cancer Fund.”

Patient-friendly Partnership

Maury Regional is engaged in a dynamic partnership with National Healthcare Corp. (NHC) to bring a new, 112-bed, long-term care facility to the county. The $18 million facility transfers 92 beds from the NHC Hillview facility and 20 from a unit previously located within MRMC. The new facility’s focus is transitional care, with patients referred primarily (but not exclusively) from Maury Regional and staying an average of three to four weeks before moving to a lower-level setting, says Gerald Coggin, NHC senior vice president.

“We’re excited about this joint venture with Maury Regional, with whom we’ve had a long relationship by managing their skilled-nursing unit within the hospital,” Coggin says. “It makes a lot of sense for post-acute providers like NHC to partner with acute-care hospitals like Maury Regional, especially as the industry is under increasing pressure to provide high-quality care at the lowest possible costs.”

Emergency, Outpatient Services

TriStar Health, a division of Nashville-based HCA, also has a strong and growing presence within Maury County, with emergency and outpatient services available through its TriStar Spring Hill ER. The facility is committed to helping residents live healthier lives, says Keri McKamey, ER director.

“The community has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, and with that has come the need for quality health care close to home,” McKamey says. “We are honored to serve the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” As part of the larger TriStar network in Middle Tennessee, the Spring Hill facility combines “a traditional ER without the long wait times” with the ability to access acute-care services in nearby communities.

“We treat emergent conditions and offer laboratory services, imaging technologies, telemedicine, and a helipad for expedited transport to area hospitals for seriously ill or injured patients,” McKamey says. “Critical patients can be easily transitioned into the care of TriStar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.”
