The first-ever Hub City Innovation Cup occurred at Union University in September 2022, and several high school students from Madison County competed in the event. The Hub City Innovation Cup is a two-day competition where teams of three to five students work to develop a concept, product, idea or service that makes life better in Jackson. Then, a panel of judges grades the teams.

The Innovation Cup is scheduled to become an annual event every September as an educational collaboration between Jackson Madison County School System, Lane College, Union University and the University of Memphis-Lambuth. About $5,000 in total prize money is awarded to first, second and third-place winners.
