New App and Website Make it Easy to Visit and Enjoy Jackson, TN

Visitors can quickly build fun itineraries with new website & app

By Cary Estes on August 8, 2018

In 2018, Jackson became the first Destination Marketing Organization in the state of Tennessee to launch the Visit Widget app, an itenerary-building phone app for visitors. The “Visit Jackson TN!†app is available for free download for Android and iOS devices, as well as on the new jacksontn.com tourism website, which was launched in 2017.

Once the app is activated, users have five initial choices. They can connect with Jackson through social media (the Feed link), learn what is taking place in the area (Event), get information on local attractions (Places), look over suggested tourism itineraries (Tours), or plan a day and map it out with the itinerary builder (My Plan).

So now if you want to find out if there are any concerts being held in Jackson next weekend, you can just check the app. Looking for a place to eat? Check the app. Seeking something as specific as Civil War historical sites? It’s all on the app.

“Originally we were just looking for some type of mapping feature on our website that we could integrate and update,†says Lori Nunnery, executive director of the Jackson Tennessee Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We connected with the folks at Visit Widget, and they provided not only the mapping widget but also the app to accompany it.”

“So not only does it have a great, clean mapping feature that interfaces with Google, it also integrates our social media feed and events calendar. Plus you can build your own itinerary, and it has our suggested itineraries on there as well. So it’s not just a map. It’s a comprehensive piece that integrates all those features together.”

The app is so detailed that it has a total of 17 individual categories: stay, eat, attractions, arts and culture, nightlife, libations, retail, sports/outdoor, history/Civil War, music, family-friendly, free fun, festivals, spa and wellness, special events, venues, and colleges. Most of the listed locations are in the greater Jackson area, but some extend throughout western Tennessee.

That means in a single visit to the app, you can get information about such disparate destinations as Jackson Float Therapy and Massage, Samuel T. Bryant Distillery, LLC, Cypress Grove Nature Park, and Indigo Scents Candle Co. It’s all neatly packaged and easy to find.

Nunnery says she already has seen examples of the app helping visitors plan trips to Jackson, including weddings. Users can find potential wedding venues, restaurants for the rehearsal dinner, and hotel and entertainment options, then create a planned itinerary that they can provide to their guests before arriving in town.

“We’re getting great positive feedback about the app,†Nunnery says. “It’s a cleaner, easier read and very user-friendly. And people really like being able to plug into events. If they’re looking for something to do tonight, they can just pull up the calendar and see what’s going on.”

New Website

All this information also can be easily accessed from the tourism website, because the widget that is used in the app is embedded in the website as well. Simply click on the round “Visit Jackson†logo, and the widget will pop up on a desktop computer.
