East Tennessee residents stay healthy, thanks to top-notch care for all ages.
Blount County is blessed with an abundance of quality health and wellness choices, including access to the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and the Mayo Clinic.
The independent Blount Memorial Hospital, a comprehensive short-term, 304-bed acute care facility, recently became the only hospital in Tennessee to be a part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, a select group of independent health systems that are granted special access to the Mayo Clinic Care Network’s extensive knowledge and world-leading medical expertise.
Newsweek named the Mayo Clinic in 2021 as the top hospital in the world. Local physicians can participate in information-sharing and integrated care benefiting their patients at no additional cost.
Excellent Cancer Care in Blount County
Also a leader in cancer care, the Blount Memorial Cancer Center, located on the hospital’s main campus, provides a one-stop address for inpatient and outpatient oncology services to diagnose and treat all types of cancer.
“Continuously improving the health of our community is our mission at Blount Memorial Hospital, and it’s a mission we’ve had the honor to deliver on for nearly 75 years,” CEO Don Heinemann says. “As the health needs of our community change, we plan for and change to support them. That’s why we’re always working to bring our patients new technologies, a growing number of physician specialties and resources for overall health and wellness outside of the medical setting.”
On the horizon are plans for the hospital’s 75th anniversary in 2022, celebrating a rich tradition of helping the community reach its highest potential for good health.
Serving the Youngest in East Tennessee
Since opening in 1937, the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital has provided a positive, family-centered atmosphere of friendliness, cooperation and support — regardless of race, religion or the ability to pay – in a unique, pediatric environment.
Located in Knoxville, the 152-bed comprehensive regional pediatric center is one of four in Tennessee and is accredited by the Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest health care accreditor.
The Children’s Hospital will be opening an urgent care center in Blount County in 2021. Blount Outpatient Center will operate nights and weekends, offering care for non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses.
Here, specially trained physicians in more than 30 subspecialties address illnesses from the common cold to cancer, treating the area’s youngest citizens from birth to 21.
The hospital partners with pediatric offices throughout the region to provide primary care and is represented by Maryville Pediatrics. The practice saw nearly 18,500 young patients last year, and more than 4,000 Blount County youngsters received emergency care at the main hospital.
Innovative Care Throughout Region
Another outstanding health care offering in Blount County for all ages is the Knoxville-based Summit Medical Group. It is East Tennessee’s largest primary care organization, with more than 300 providers in more than 60 practice locations, including five general practices and one pediatric office in Maryville.
Since its founding in 1995, the physician practice has been firmly committed to being at the forefront of technology, innovation and compassionate service at an affordable cost for the patient. Plus, the practice continuously works to respond to the needs of its patients through innovation and expansion. It is a regional leader in offering diagnostic imaging and centralized laboratory services, annually processing more than 5 million tests.
Summit’s Diabetes Recognition Program and its Heart/Stroke Recognition Program are both ranked in the top 10 nationally by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality.
