This might be our most surprising list yet.
Pop quiz: what comes to mind when you picture a “retirement city”?
A few stereotypes probably spring to mind: pastel condos, earlybird specials and shuffleboard courts among them.
But today’s retirees are different. They value freedom and revel in defying stereotypes. They want quality health care, low crime rates and affordable cost of living, yes, but they also want easy access to outdoor recreation, arts and culture, social connections and new opportunities.
We took all of this into account when compiling our list of the Top 10 Best Places to Retire, 2017. The cities on this year’s list reflect the changing attitudes and lifestyles of today’s seniors. They include hot and cold climates, vibrant urban centers, charming small towns, thriving art scenes and — spoiler alert! — only one of them is in Florida.
