Go There: Experience Rich History and Unforgettable Memories in Midland, TX

From Friday Night Lights to a foodie's paradise, it's true that everything is bigger in Texas, including big fun in Midland.

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. Midland? Of all the cities in the big state of Texas? But hear me out. Lovingly known as the heart of West Texas, Midland isn’t what you’d expect (in the absolute best way.)

Bursting with history, tradition and, of course, a ton of Texas pride, Midland is more than worthy of a trip to the state of cowboys, longhorns and rodeos. In fact, it’s even home to two former presidents, two governors of the state and two first ladies. When you add in delectable, down-home cuisine, unique archives of the past and an unwavering spirit for days gone by, Midland easily becomes a destination that can’t be missed.

Where to Stay

When I’m traveling, I love immersing myself in their culture. From breakfast to bed, I want the full, local experience, and that’s exactly what you’ll find at The Midland Hotel. Decked out in a turn-of-the-century theme, The Midland Hotel offers 14 rooms — each with its own unique, historical story.

The staff describes the space as a storybook — with every room housing a chapter of their history. My personal favorite element is that none of the rooms actually feel like a hotel. Instead, you’re greeted with cozy amenities, warm textures and charming decor. From the antique settees to the locally inspired artwork, The Midland Hotel is much more comparable to staying in your favorite guest room at a friend’s house. Except here, downstairs holds a vintage-style saloon and chop house (with incredible cocktails and cuts of beef, might I add.)

Where to Eat

As a self-proclaimed foodie, unique dishes are something that are always on my must-have list for any vacation, and Midland certainly didn’t disappoint. Having several friends from Texas and quite a few from this area in particular, I knew my first stop had to be tacos. Calling themselves home to the best tacos in town, I had high expectations for Taco DiVino. After just one bite of the Holy Pastor, I could see why they took the title. With perfectly seasoned pork shoulder, grilled pineapple, cilantro, onions and lime, this was hands-down one of the best tacos I’ve ever had. And while it might not be the first beverage you think of when you’re eating tacos, this local favorite also had suggested wine pairings for each taco on the menu, making ordering a breeze.

No visit to Midland is complete without a visit to Opal’s Table. Their modern twist on Southern classics like pimento cheese, cornbread and grits are not to be missed. Plus, you can finish off your meal in The Basement. This spacious bar area is located right below the restaurant and boasts plenty of specialty cocktails, small plates and cigars for the perfect nightcap.

What to Do

Coming from a small town myself, I love nothing more than a place that feeds into it, and Midland does just that. In fact, if you find yourself chatting with a local, there’s a good chance they’ve lived there their whole life, and with good reason.

I’ve always wanted to visit a traditional drive-in movie theater, so naturally, I had to try Midland’s Big Sky Drive-In. Not only was the staff super friendly, but the experience itself was more incredible than I could have imagined. Whether it was families or friends pulling up together, the excitement was palpable across the crowd.

Speaking of things to do under the stars, Midland is home to one of the world’s few Spitz SciDome HD Star Projectors. The dome houses a 360-degree, state-of-the-art Digistar 5 system with 3D capabilities and is located inside the Museum of the Southwest. While there, you can also check out their Children’s Museum, rotating scientific exhibits and their ongoing lawn concert series.

If you’re still looking for even more entertainment, the Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center always has something to enjoy. From performances by local artists and dance groups and traveling Broadway shows to symphonic masterpieces and live comedy, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.

Local Obsession: Friday Night Lights

Every story has an origin, and for “Friday Night Lights,” it all started in Texas. Just a little over 20 miles east of Midland, to be exact. Though the blockbuster television show and New York Times bestselling novel were based on Odessa’s Permian High School, the commitment to high school sports and all the fanfare it encompasses is inspired by the surrounding counties as well, including Midland.

While a local game might not traditionally be on your vacation list, this is an experience you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. Texans take pride in their future generations — and what one celebrates, they all celebrate. It is Southern hospitality exemplified at its finest.
