Students have multiple choices to attend top academic institutions in Tyler, including universities, colleges, a dozen private schools, charter schools and highly regarded public school districts.

Higher Education

The University of Texas at Tyler houses six academic colleges: arts and sciences, business and technology, education and psychology, engineering, nursing and health sciences, and pharmacy. And at Texas College, students have access to 12 baccalaureate degree programs within four divisions: business and social sciences, general studies and humanities, natural and computational science, and education. Meanwhile, two-year Tyler Junior College was established in 1926 and today offers 120 degree options and certificate programs.

Private Schools

Faith-based private schools in the Tyler area include All Saints Episcopal, Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Regional Catholic, The Brook Hill School, Christian Heritage School, East Texas Christian Academy, Good Shepherd School, Grace Community School, King’s Academy Christian School, St. Gregory Cathedral School, Stepping Stone School and Tyler Adventist Christian School.

Tyler also has Oak Hill Montessori School that serves students from preschool through elementary school. Using the Montessori method of self-directed education, teachers provide opportunities and resources, and children are encouraged to follow their curiosity.

Charter Schools

Open to residents and students throughout the area are three University of Texas at Tyler Innovation Academy charter public school campuses. The schools in Tyler, Longview and Palestine are all located on corresponding UT Tyler campuses and focus on students learning through a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum. All campuses opened in 2012 with grades three-six and are adding a grade every year until the schools reach 12th grade. Currently, grades have been added through the 10th grade, and high school students are able to take dual-credit courses through UT Tyler.

Also available to Tyler residents is Cumberland Academy, which has an elementary, middle and high school. Phase I of the new high school opened in November 2015 for ninth- and 10th-graders, and Phase II is currently under construction to eventually accommodate grades 11 and 12. The new Phase II addition is expected to open in August of 2017 and will house several classrooms, an auditorium and an athletics field. The staff at Cumberland Academy prides itself in providing students with a complete educational experience enhanced by multiple technology programs and its arts curriculums.

Tyler Independent School District
