1. Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville
This beloved Virginia event is now in its fourth decade, drawing bibliophiles and intellectuals from across the state and beyond.
“Along with a stellar slate of authors, we offer performances, activities and workshops that bring out the best in poetry, children’s literature, fiction and nonfiction,” says Kalela Williams, director of Virginia Center for the Book.
2. Daffodil Festival in Gloucester
This vibrant festival is spring incarnate, with yellow daffodil blooms transforming downtown Gloucester into an undeniably cheerful setting. There’s a parade, live entertainment, local artists, food vendors and the Daffodil Show, which features gorgeous floral arrangements. Next year will mark the festival’s 40th anniversary, cementing it as a Virginia staple.
3. Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester
Celebrating 100 years of tradition, this event is a true Virginia treasure. A 10-day homecoming that blends small-town charm with big-time celebration, it boasts over 50 events. The festival is made possible by more than 1,500 volunteers and sponsors.
“The festival is a joyful tribute to America, the blooming apple trees of spring and the Shenandoah Valley’s deep agricultural and historical roots,” says Dario Savarese, director of marketing for the event.
4. Spring Town Point Virginia Wine Festival in Norfolk
This wine festival is renowned for its focus on premier Virginia wines and the winemakers who produce them. Guests may sample over 200 varietals while gaining a deeper appreciation for the art of winemaking through conversations with vintners.
“A longstanding springtime tradition, the festival encompasses quality, education and celebration in a stunning setting along the downtown Norfolk waterfront,” says Ted Baroody, CEO of Norfolk Festevents, the organization that puts on the festival.
5. State Fair of Virginia in Doswell
The State Fair of Virginia has been an integral part of the state’s cultural landscape for over 170 years.
“Our goal is to be the region’s best family entertainment option while serving the mission of telling Virginia’s story, especially its agricultural heritage,” says Kathy Dixon, spokesperson for the fair. “Every fair, we showcase the best of Virginia agriculture, from livestock competitions to student gardens to milking demonstrations. Our fairgoers get to learn about farming while having fun.”
6. Sunflower Festival in Somerset
Held at the idyllic Liberty Mills Farm at the end of summer, the Sunflower Festival offers opportunities for attendees to walk through the beautiful sunflower fields, where they can take photos, pick their own flowers and shop from local vendors, all while enjoying live music and a cheerful atmosphere. This Virginia event marks the end of summer and ushers in fall, incorporating delicious farm store goods and typical harvest activities like hayrides.
7. Umoja Festival in Portsmouth
From the Kiswahili word “umoja,” which means unity, the Umoja Festival in Portsmouth celebrates African American culture and heritage. As one of the oldest festivals in the state, it highlights traditional and contemporary art, including many handmade items such as baskets and quilts. With a marketplace of artistic goods for purchase as well as delicious ethnic foods and live music, it’s a special event that’s worth attending.
8. Urbanna Oyster Festival
On the first weekend of November, seafood lovers flock to Urbanna for its ever-so-popular Oyster Festival. With more than 50,000 people in attendance, this small town transforms into a bustling hub of activity each year. From mouthwatering oysters to fun parades to live music, it’s no wonder so many people make sure to soak up all that this festival has to offer.
9. Salem Fair
The Salem Fair is wholesome family fun at its finest. Held annually in July at the Salem Civic Center, the Salem Fair features rides, food, agricultural exhibits, crafts, competitions and a fireworks show. Live music, pig races, a cowboy circus and dog shows are included in the entertainment lineup, as well.
10. Virginia Gold Cup
Set at the Great Meadow racecourse in The Plains, the Virginia Gold Cup is American steeplechase at its finest.
“The Virginia Gold Cup, over the past century, has made steeplechase one of the most prestigious sports in America,” says Tom Eshelman, executive director of the Virginia Gold Cup.
This premier Virginia event is one of only two in the nation that has a water feature, making it riveting for spectators.
11. FloydFest
This special event combines incredible music with outdoor adventure, stunning views and a true sense of community. Within the same weekend, visitors can relax, hike, camp, shop local vendors and discover new artists. This family-friendly festival offers plenty of enriching activities and curated performances.
“The unique mix of music, mountains and magic has made FloydFest a Virginia staple and must-do summer tradition,” says Kathleen Legg, Floyd County tourism director.
12. Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon
This Virginia event has been a regional staple for over 75 years, bringing folks together to honor all things Appalachia, from food and history to arts and crafts. Spanning 10 days, the Virginia Highlands Festival features many exhibits and events, such as an arts and crafts show, an antiques and vintage market, a hot air balloon show, food trucks, music and performing arts, and guided outdoor trips.
