Two new state-of-the-art facilities give Sweetwater County residents even more health-care options and put specialized medical care close to home. The first, an 80,000-square-foot office building and cancer treatment center that is part of Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County, offers everything from family medicine and obstetrics services to a 10-chair infusion center in its medical oncology department. Less than 2 miles down the road, the recently completed Sweetwater Health Center & Pharmacy provides a range of discounted health-care services on a sliding-fee scale. Both Memorial Hospital and the Community Health Center are located just off Dewar Drive (U.S. 30), the main east-west route through the city.

Medical Office Building and Cancer Treatment Center

The long-anticipated completion of Memorial Hospital’s office building and cancer treatment center means a variety of world-class health-care services are now available to area residents, notes facility CEO Jerry Klein. In addition to its flagship Regional Cancer Treatment Center, the $16.1 million facility features family practice and pediatric services; an internal medicine department; nephrology, otolaryngology, pulmonology and urology units; and a general surgery department. It also includes orthopedic and rehabilitation services (physical, occupational and speech therapy), a cardiac unit, and a women’s health and obstetrics division.

The cancer treatment center, created through a partnership with the University of Utah’s Huntsman Cancer Institute, is the first of its kind in southwest Wyoming and includes state-of-the-art chemotherapy and radiation-therapy equipment. The multidisciplinary facility is led by a board-certified hematologist oncologist and offers comprehensive treatment services for all types of malignancies and blood disorders.

Providing general medical care and cancer-treatment services under one roof “changes the delivery of health care to our patients across the region,” Klein says. Patients, for instance, no longer have to travel to see specialty providers. And those who are scheduled for routine appointments can now just walk down the hall for related services like imaging studies or blood work.

Sweetwater Health Center

Less than five minutes away from Memorial Hospital, Sweetwater Health Center & Pharmacy opened its doors in April of 2014. The facility anticipates serving more than 5,000 medical patients and 3,700 dental patients each year, says CEO Luis Alvariza, and is doing so through a sliding-fee scale designed to ensure that low-income individuals can afford exactly the care they need, whether they’re insured or not.

“Our mission is to supply quality and affordable care to everyone,” Alvariza says. “And we do it in a way that really focuses on making an emotional connection with the patient. When you come here, you’re treated like a person, not like a number.”

Like Memorial Hospital, the health center bills itself as a one-stop medical facility offering everything from sports physicals and pediatric services to chronic disease management, an on-site pharmacy, and dental care. The FQHC (federally qualified health center) typically sees patients the same day appointments are made and has staff fluent in both English and Spanish.

"Everyone is welcome,” Alvariza says. “We’re always accepting new patients.”

“Our mission is to supply quality and affordable care to everybody.”
