Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site
While rock climbers from throughout the world descend on El Paso's Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site every winter, El Pasoans know of the gems that await them every day of the year.
"When you live in a city, you sometimes forget what's in your own backyard," says Gary Wilson, office manager at Hueco Tanks. "But we have so much to offer people of all ages and ability levels, and the residents of El Paso are coming out and enjoying the park year round now."
Along with world-famous rock climbing and one of the largest collections of ancient rock paintings in North America, Hueco Tanks offers hiking, camping, animal and bird watching, picnicking and ranger-led programs.
Franklin Mountains State Park
The Franklins, Texas' largest sustained mountain range, offer modern-day outdoor enthusiasts a glimpse of the nation's only tin mining, milling and smelting operation, which was active from 1910 through 1915. Today, the Franklins are a popular spot for mountain biking, as well as rock climbing in McKelligon Canyon, camping, paragliding and hiking, with a network that will ultimately offer a system of more than 100 miles of trails.
Indoor Sports Facilities
El Pasoans who want to exercise in cool indoor comfort enjoy several facilities around the city. The EP Dream Arena offers a multi-sport gym for all ages and enthusiasts of activities such as basketball, soccer, volleyball and kickball, Xtreem Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts and baby yoga.
When residents prefer to spectate rather than participate, generations of families have been coming out to the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso to watch the annual Sun Bowl game, which pits two of the Bowl Championship Series' teams against one another. After a start as a fundraising event in 1935, the Sun Bowl has evolved into one of college football's major bowl games.
