One of the neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids most tied to its history is the Czech Village & New Bohemia District. The popular residential and entertainment destination along the Cedar River traces its history to the 1850s when thousands of Bohemian, Moravian and Slovakian immigrants began arriving in Cedar Rapids.
Walking the picturesque streets, visitors admire the architecture and smell the aroma of locally owned coffee shops and restaurants. The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library offers a fascinating glimpse into the area’s rich cultural heritage, while Lion Bridge Brewing Co. serves up craft brews in a lively atmosphere. Vintage apparel, outdoor gear and home goods decorate the windows of the many local and niche shops and boutiques.

Living History: Historic Buildings Transformed into Modern Living Spaces
Many of the city’s architectural treasures have been thoughtfully transformed into unique living spaces — serving as another testament to its commitment to preserving its past while embracing its future. Local developers like Hobart Historic Restoration, led by the dynamic husband-and-wife duo Jim and B.J. Hobart, have played a key role in this revitalization. Their passion for breathing new life into historic structures shines through in projects like The Chelsea and Mott Lofts, where once-forgotten buildings are now stylish living spaces with a story to tell.
The Chelsea: From Milk Factory to Luxury Apartments
The Chelsea dates back to 1887, originally a milk condensing factory. The three-story building fell into significant disrepair until HHR tackled the project. Today, The Chelsea has been transformed into 18 high-end apartments with brick walls, exposed beams, open floor plans, modern appliances and river views.
“There is pride in bringing something like this back,” B.J. Hobart says.
Mott Lofts: Warehouse Living with Historic Charm
Mott Lofts is a historic warehouse that HHR rejuvenated and turned into apartments and commercial retail space. The rehabilitated building features 16 high-end apartments with open ceilings, exposed columns, brick walls and a fitness room. Several floor-plan options are available.
Neighborhood Taverns
The Seventh Street building housing Sacred Cow Tavern has had many lives, including a grocery store, church and after-hours club among them. Located in the Oak Hill Jackson neighborhood, the building now serves as an idyllic tavern.
“In 2019, the building was purchased by our business partner, Kory Nanke, when the entire structure was rundown, which was a shame to see this building go to waste in such a great spot,” says Tim Oathout, Sacred Cow Tavern’s operating manager and chef. “A lot of time and money went into revitalizing the building, including repairing the foundation and bringing everything up to code to operate a business.”
Sacred Cow Tavern: A Neighborhood Gem in a Restored Building
Finally, Sacred Cow Tavern opened a few years later as a neighborhood bar and grill specializing in comfort food, like burgers and fries. The laid-back atmosphere, tasty menu and whimsical cow-themed mural make it a popular local hangout.
“Oak Hill Jackson is a great neighborhood that has gone unrecognized for a long time because it’s not on a main road, but it’s amazing to see how many people now stop at the Sacred Cow on their way home from work or shopping, or sneak out of the house for a quick bite,” Oathout says. “A historic building with a business like Sacred Cow Tavern made sense for this part of Cedar Rapids, and things are going really well.”
The story of Cedar Rapids is one of continuous evolution. With each restored building and repurposed space, the city writes a new chapter, ensuring its rich heritage remains a part of its future.
