1. Bike High Trestle Trail
High Trestle Trail is incredibly popular, and for good reason. The 25-mile trail meanders through five towns, showcasing some of Iowa’s most gorgeous natural beauty. Along the way, you’ll find lots of restaurants and other places to stop.
“Biking on the High Trestle Trail during the summer is one of my favorite things to do,” says Julie Moss, a resident who works for Chevron Renewable Energy Group. “The scenery is beautiful, and there are a lot of fun stops along the route, especially The Slater Station and Whatcha Smokin? nearby.”
2. Cheer for the Home Team
Iowa State University is a huge school, and it has sporting events taking place year-round. Basketball is a local favorite, with games held at the beloved Hilton Coliseum. Pro tip: Be sure to sample a “clone cone,” an ice cream delicacy only served at Iowa State. When the game is over, head to nearby Cyclone Liquors, where you can squeeze into their speakeasy, Cellar 626.
3. Attend a Cooking Class

Whether you’re looking to sit back and enjoy or dive in to create your own masterpiece, this is a must-try experience in Ames.”

4. Check Out Inside Golf & Games
Located at the North Grand Mall, Inside Golf & Games is a one-stop shop for entertainment. As the name suggests, there is a golf simulator, but there’s also a baseball simulator. Beyond virtual activities, patrons can try their hand at ax throwing and duckpin bowling. Plus, there’s always a great selection of appetizers and drinks. Follow this activity up with dinner at Ge-Angelo’s Italian Restaurant, where they serve the best calzone in all of Ames. You won’t be disappointed.

After sitting in an office all day, nothing beats the feeling of working up a sweat, all while engaging in some friendly competition. The Ames Parks and Recreation adult leagues offer such an opportunity, and whether your sport is volleyball, softball or even badminton, you can find a spot on a team.
