Algarra moved to Daytona Beach in 2023 and began working as an intensive care unit nurse at AdventHealth.

Nearly 10 years after graduating from college, Jacqueline Algarra is still regularly learning – and teaching – in her career at AdventHealth.

Algarra moved to Daytona Beach from New Jersey in 2023 and began working as an intensive care unit nurse at AdventHealth. “I learn something new every week here,” Algarra says. “It can be challenging, and it really keeps you on your toes. But I thrive in this environment.”

Not long after Algarra’s arrival, an AdventHealth manager asked if there was anything she would like to do to grow in her career. Algarra said she was interested in helping train new nurses.

“A nursing education role has been a calling to me,” Algarra says. “The ICU can be a little overwhelming at first. I let the nurses know that no matter what happens, I’m always right there to help. You watch them start and they’re a little unsure, then you see them doing things on their own, and you realize you helped make that happen. That’s very rewarding. It’s something I’ve really enjoyed about working at AdventHealth.”

Algarra also assists at the Bob & Carol Allen School of Nursing clinic at Daytona State College. She gives aspiring nurses a look at what life is like in the ICU and instructs them in such tasks as inserting an IV.

“We have nurses working alongside me at AdventHealth who used to be my clinic students,” Algarra says. “You’re helping mold them to be a real nurse one day.”

During her off time, Algarra enjoys going for walks on the beach with her dog, a Yorkie named Walter. After enduring the New Jersey winters for so long, Algarra says she loves soaking up the warm weather in Daytona Beach.

But most of all, Algarra says she appreciates the opportunities she is receiving from AdventHealth to further her nursing career.

“My mom has been a nurse since 1982, so I’ve been around it my whole life,” Algarra says. “In high school I thought it was only about blood and gross things, but now I know this is what I’m meant to do.”
