Several high-profile projects are shaping the future – and landscape – of Rutherford County.
Sewart’s Landing, a mixed-use development, is bringing new retail, dining, medical office space and housing to Smyrna. The 44-acre development will also feature a 240-room hotel. In Murfreesboro, the 78-acre Clari Park development includes multifamily housing, restaurants and shopping across the road from The Avenue shopping and dining complex. Also in Murfreesboro, the Town Creek project is improving walkability by adding new paths near downtown and connecting to the proposed pedestrian bridge over Broad Street, one of the city’s major transportation arteries.
Another anticipated addition to the retail roster is Trader Joe’s, which will bring its eclectic selection of specialty grocery items to Rutherford County.
New Leadership, New Vision
Rutherford County is also welcoming a wave of new leadership, ready to steer the community toward continued success.
In Smyrna, David Santucci has taken the reins as town manager, bringing fresh energy to local governance. In Murfreesboro, Darren Gore is stepping up as city manager, tasked with overseeing the city’s rapid growth and infrastructure needs. Gore, a licensed electrical engineer by trade, is a Rutherford County native and has worked for the city in some capacity for 20 years.
At the Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport Authority, Evan Lester has been named executive director, bringing a new perspective to one of the region’s key transportation hubs. With a focus on economic development and connectivity, Lester is expected to help expand the airport’s impact on local business and travel.

Murfreesboro City Schools is also making waves, with six of its schools earning Level 5 recognition. Adding to the accolades, Cathy Pressnell, coordinator of reading for grades 3-6 in Murfreesboro City Schools, was named Tennessee’s Supervisor of the Year for 2024-25. Her dedication to education and leadership is shaping the future for students across the district.
