Livability Oak Ridge, TN Magazine

Beautiful mountain scenery, excellent parks, miles of waterfront trails, excellent schools, fun festivals and cultural events are just some of the top draws to Oak Ridge. Situated in Anderson and Roane counties just 20 miles from the urban center of Knoxville, Oak Ridge’s central location provides residents with access to everything they need. The city, incorporated in 1959, originally began as a top-secret site for the U.S. government’s Manhattan Project in 1942. Many of those earliest residents chose to stay, and advanced scientific and technological research continues at the area’s largest employers, the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
