Saturdays at Play: The Ultimate Oak Ridge, TN Weekend Itinerary
Picture this: You wake up after a good night’s rest, ready to make the most of the weekend. Oak Ridge is a fantastic place to live, after all, and there’s no shortage of compelling options for the perfect Saturday itinerary.
Morning
Because the best days start with coffee and a delicious bite of something sweet or savory (whatever your taste buds demand), a trip to one of Oak Ridge’s beloved coffee shops is a must. Bud’s Farmhouse Coffee is great for a rustic, laid-back vibe (and its house-roasted coffee is delicious). You also can’t go wrong with Calamity’s Coffee, where connection and community go hand in hand.
“Calamity’s is dedicated to fueling dreams, one cup at a time,” says Jordan Bair, owner. “We remember customers and go out of our way to make drinks exactly how they want them – in fact, most of our drinks are named after customers.”
Once you’re fueled up and ready to move on to the next activity, be sure to hit the American Museum of Science and Energy, which highlights Oak Ridge’s role in the historic Manhattan Project. Or, if you’re craving some time outdoors, have a wander around A.K. Bissell Park.
While you’re there, be sure to go by the International Friendship Bell, located inside the Peace Pavilion at the park. This massive, 8,000-pound bronze bell was cast in Japan and is a symbol of peace and reconciliation between the two nations.
Afternoon
When your stomach starts grumbling, there’s no better place to satisfy your hunger than Big Ed’s Pizza, which has been an Oak Ridge establishment for over 55 years. Known for its casual, family-friendly atmosphere and New York-style crust, Big Ed’s Pizza has stayed in business for so long because of its quality and tradition.
Playing to the nostalgia that draws the customers, the restaurant is decked out with memorabilia covering its walls, adding to that classic, undeniably welcoming atmosphere that all patrons experience the second they walk through the door.
Stomach full, it’s a good idea to get your body moving. Head on over to Melton Lake Park, located along the Clinch River, where the waterfront views and long greenway trails beckon. If you’re feeling so inclined, maybe you’ll give kayaking or paddleboarding a go. Other great options are Haw Ridge Park, where you can hike, bike and birdwatch, or the University of Tennessee Arboretum, with its stunning wildflower gardens and educational exhibits about regional ecology.
Evening
Finally, it’s time for dinner and some entertainment. Indulge in some of the best Southern barbecue around at Calhoun’s. Even with its serene setting on the water offering picturesque views of the Clinch River, it’s the food at Calhoun’s that takes it over the top. The ale steak and corn pudding are favorites, but everything on the menu is great.

Calhoun’s isn’t just a good place to eat, it’s a good place to be – and the perfect way to kick off the evening.
Afterward, it’s time to treat yourself to a nice drink and maybe some live entertainment. If wine is your beverage of choice, give 201 Cafe and Wine Bar a try. A coffee shop by day that transitions to a wine bar at night, this stylish spot is known for its curated wine selections, though craft cocktails and delectable desserts are on the menu as well. It’s an intimate and relaxed setting that’s perfect for winding down.
However, if you aren’t quite ready to wind down and want a livelier atmosphere, head over to the Greens, an all-in-one spot for drinks and play. We’re talking 56 holes of mini golf, live music and epic lawn games. And of course, a stellar lineup of drinks from Gypsy Circus Cider Co. and Atomic City Brewing. It’s a great place to take a date or meet up with friends, and it’s always a good time.
