The Mobile Chamber Is Building a Workforce for the Future
In a region where aerospace giants, the maritime industry and a growing healthcare sector are reshaping the economy, Mobile’s ability to attract and retain skilled talent has never mattered more. The Mobile Chamber is meeting that challenge head-on through its More to Mobile initiative – a multifaceted effort to make the city a place to live, work, grow and explore.
“We wanted people looking to move to Mobile to have access to information about our city’s neighborhoods, the types of jobs they can find here and how they can plug into the community,” says Kellie Snodgrass, Mobile Chamber director of workforce development. “It’s important for us to not only attract a talented workforce but to keep them engaged and invested in building their future here.”
The More to Mobile brand was launched to showcase the region’s affordability, career opportunities and quality of life. MoreToMobileAL.com serves as a resource for those looking to make Mobile home. The platform highlights key regional strengths, including Mobile’s lower cost of living compared to national averages, access to coastal amenities, and a diverse job market anchored by major employers in manufacturing, logistics and healthcare.
Attracting and Keeping Talent
Attracting talent is only part of the equation. The Chamber has built a robust infrastructure for keeping young talent engaged. The Young Professionals of Mobile group, known as YP of MOB, was formed in 2022 to engage and empower professionals between the ages of 21 and 40, hosting monthly socials and professional development events.
With more than 1,200 participants in the Chamber’s database, the program reflects genuine momentum. The group also creates pathways for civic engagement, connecting emerging leaders with volunteer opportunities, boards and local initiatives that deepen their ties to the Mobile region.
The Chamber’s workforce strategy also runs deep into the community’s institutional fabric. The Mobile Area Workforce Alliance, convened by the Chamber, brings school systems, community colleges, universities and workforce agencies together under a unified plan of action with specific goals, defined responsibilities and measurable outcomes. “The Workforce Alliance is about getting the right partners around the table, aligned and working together,” says Mobile Chamber President and CEO Bradley Byrne. “By sharing ideas and eliminating duplication, we’re seeing real momentum in building a strong workforce pipeline.”
The collaboration helps sync curricula with industry needs, expand work-based learning opportunities and create clear career pathways for students and job seekers.
Chamber leadership has been clear that talent development is not separate from economic development. It is a vital part of economic development. As this South Alabama region continues to grow, More to Mobile positions the city not just as a destination for businesses, but as a destination for the people who power them.
