Once you move here, feel free to call Tallahassee by her nickname, Tally. Located in the Florida Panhandle, this state capital has landed on Livability’s lists of the Best Cities for Entrepreneurs and Best Places to Get a Fresh Start thanks in part to its impressive economic growth. The city is thrumming with energy as home to Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College — which provide a pipeline of talented workers. A buzzy nightlife scene and 700 miles of trails in the area keep residents entertained. The area’s affordability is a draw, too, with the average home price under $180,000.

Top Industries and Employers: Education, state government and healthcare are leading industries, with Florida State University, the State of Florida and Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare all big-time employers.

Best Coffee Shop: Tally Cat Café, which is a wine bar and coffee shop and a separate Cat Lounge that’s home to local humane society cats who are up for adoption.

Best Local Beer/Brewery: Experimental brews at Ology Brewing Co

Must-Have Meal: A slice of pizza as big as your head from Momo’s Pizza

Best Co-Working Space: CoLab@thePod

Best Meetup Spot (When Meeting Up Is a Thing Again): Go bowling or play games at Hangar 38.

Creative Hub: Railroad Square Art Park is made up of more than 70 galleries, studios, vintage shops and cafes. The Crumbox Gastgarden is a cafe built from a retired railroad caboose.

Favorite Weekend Activity: Enjoy nature trails and the lighthouse at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge.

Free Way to Have Fun: Visit Cascades Park. Kids can keep cool by playing in the pop-jet fountain by day. At night, the water fountain puts on a show, programmed to lights and music.

Local Dream Job: Researcher at the MagLab, the highest powered magnet lab in the country.
