1. Get your pics (and your kicks!) on Route 66.
You’ve heard the song. You’ve seen the iconic Cars movie. But have you really taken the time to appreciate the iconic highway that is Route 66? A large stretch of this famous road can be found in the Victor Valley. So, roll down the windows, take a drive and appreciate its majesty and history.
If you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, head to Victorville’s California Route 66 Museum, an interactive museum that celebrates and preserves this road’s rich history. The 4,500-square-foot museum is also chock-full of fun photo opportunities, educational exhibits, and it offers a true sense of Americana.
2. Admire the ART-itecture of the John Swisher Community Center
Some buildings are so remarkable they can only be described as art. One such artistic architectural anomaly can be found in Hesperia Lake Park: The John Swisher Community Center. Nicknamed the Swisher building, this colorful, dome-shaped facility is primarily used as a private rental space for community members celebrating special occasions.
3. Take an off-roading adventure at El Mirage Dry Lake.
For adrenaline-seekers, Adelanto’s El Mirage Dry Lake Off-Highway Recreation Area needs to get bumped to the top of your to-do list! With an astounding 27,275 acres, this pristine off-roading terrain is ideal for ATVs, motorcycles, trucks and even air-bound activities like model rockets and parasails. El Mirage is a lake bed, meaning it is flat with a hard and smooth clay surface. And although there’s no official speed limit, be sure to read the rules and regulations for safety.
4. Visit the Home of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
There’s a famous home located right here in Apple Valley: The Westlund Family Home. The adobe home is named for the co-founder of Apple Valley, Bud Westlund, who built the four-bedroom, two-bath home for his wife. Eventually, the Westlunds moved away, and their home was sold to none other than the famous movie stars Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, best known for their roles in Western films.
5. See scenes from the Silver Screen
Did you know that the High Desert region has been used as the backdrop for several blockbuster movies? While driving around town, you may recognize roads, landscapes and buildings that were featured on the big screen in movies like Erin Brockovich, Breakdown and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
