Few things announce the arrival of the holiday season, like the return of Hallmark Christmas movies. And with each and every one, the allure of small-town America captivates all of us. The good news is that the country is bursting with these hidden treasures that are legitimately so charming and picturesque that they feel like movie sets. While there are certainly more than 10 of these charming destinations scattered throughout the nation, these are our top picks for a cozy winter getaway that promises quaint streets, twinkling lights, and the undeniable allure of that quintessential Hallmark experience.

Woodstock, Vermont

Nestled in the heart of New England, Woodstock, Vermont, is dripping with storybook charm during the holiday season. The town square boasts classic decorations and twinkling lights, horse-drawn carriages make their way down snow-draped streets, and the 18th-century architecture adds an extra oomph of warmth throughout the winter months. Add on the quaint shops bursting with local crafts, treats, and delights and the Woodstock Wassail Weekend that promises both music and historical reenactments, and it’s easy to see how this community’s festive spirit captures everything we know and love about those iconic Hallmark winter tales.

You can’t write about small-town charm without talking about Leavenworth, Washington. Nestled amidst the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Mountains, this Bavarian-inspired village is admittedly full of wonder all year long. But they take things up a notch when Christmas rolls around. Half-timbered buildings are draped with twinkle lights, carolers prowl the streets, and chestnuts are literally roasting on the fire. The city’s storybook scenery, coupled with horse-drawn sleigh rides through snow-covered streets and the iconic Christkindlmarkt Leavenworth Christmas market, make it a no-brainer addition to our list of charming towns that feel like they were plucked straight out of a Hallmark film.

Frankenmuth, Michigan

You’re right if you’re sensing a bit of a theme here. Known as Michigan’s Little Bavaria, Frankenmuth is a veritable playground for anyone who appreciates German-inspired architecture and a lively Christmas atmosphere. Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store, draws crowds with its mind-boggling array of ornaments and decorations (very much like Santa’s workshop for holiday décor gurus), and visitors can dine on the region’s best traditional German cuisine before hopping into a horse-drawn carriage ride through the sparkling, light-adorned town. Don’t forget to pop into Frankenmuth ChristKindlMarkt while you’re here. This traditional holiday market, which mimics those hosted each winter in Europe, often draws in more than 40 vendors per year and is free to attend.

Helen, Georgia

The charming Bavarian-style village of Helen, Georgia, offers more than Alpine-style architecture and twinkling lights during the holidays. It actually boasts an impressive resume as the destination of several Christmas films, which doesn’t surprise anyone who has spent time wandering the riverside streets or savoring a horse-drawn carriage ride amidst the melodies of joyful carolers. The picturesque scenery makes you feel like you’re starring in one of the classic Hallmark films. Still, the festive activities, like the Lighting of the Village, and fun-filled events, like the town’s annual Christkindlmarkt with its German crafts and seasonal treats, make you want to linger amidst this Blue Ridge Mountain town as long as possible.
