Whether residents need a routine checkup or a more intensive treatment, they usually don’t have to travel out of the region for care, as they are served by two high-quality health care systems, Halifax Health and AdventHealth, which are also two of the area’s largest employers.

Halifax Health, rated one of the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals in the U.S., operates a network of organizations, including a tertiary hospital, two community hospitals, urgent care, psychiatric services, a cancer treatment center, the area’s largest hospice, three children’s medical practices and additional facilities.

It recently became the first hospital in Florida to treat early-stage pancreatic cancer using INTRABEAM intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT), a less-invasive, single-treatment option. Halifax Health recently opened a new walk-in ExpressCare facility in Port Orange. The Belvedere Medical Park will also be home to Radiology Associates, Halifax Health Primary Care and Halifax Health Pediatric Care.

Also serving residents in the area is AdventHealth. AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division encompasses more than 20 hospitals and emergency rooms in seven counties in and surrounding metro Orlando. The health care system pushes the envelope in medical technology.

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a new drug to treat Type 1 diabetes, and AdventHealth is one of a handful of hospital systems approved to distribute this medication. AdventHealth also developed a new genetic test for patients with colorectal cancer, which can detect if a patient has cancer from a simple blood draw. The groundbreaking test could allow patients to avoid chemotherapy after having surgery to remove a tumor.

Another company in the health care realm here is Daytona Beach-based Florida Health Care Plans, which has provided health insurance and wellness programs to individuals, families and employers in Florida for 47 years. Its Preferred Fitness Program offers free, unlimited access to 80+ gyms and fitness facilities so people can find what works best for them.
