1. Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad 

The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad is a heritage railroad in Boone, offering both freight and passenger excursions. Take a ride on regular or special event trains, such as the Santa Express. Be sure to explore the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum, which showcases thousands of Iowa railroad artifacts and memorabilia. 

2. Iowa Arboretum & Gardens 

Nestled between Boone and Madrid, this meticulously crafted space boasts stunning gardens, open-planted tree areas, native woodland trails and a picturesque pond with a fountain. Plus, an exciting new development is in the works: Treehouse Village, a new play area designed especially for children and families, is set to open in 2024.

3. Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor 

Set within Iowa State University Research Park, this unique community space is dedicated to conservation techniques, sustainable technologies, environmental education and water quality awareness. The 37-acre park is a shining example of a successful, collaborative approach to commercial development. 

4. Time Out 

Located in Ames, Time Out is the perfect spot for adults to escape daily stresses. Families are welcome until 7 p.m., after which it becomes a 21 and up bar/arcade that offers karaoke, pinball and a variety of arcade games. Sip on specialty drinks and let loose like you did as a kid. 

5. The Slater Station 

This hidden gem in Slater serves double duty as a bar and venue. Popular among bikers looking for a refreshing drink after a long ride, the Slater Station features a stellar outdoor patio, an amazing beer garden and refreshing, cold drinks.
