How to Live the Local Life in Ames, Iowa
Katy McMahon grew up in Ames, Iowa, and now, she is proud that her children are having that same wonderful experience. Though she left the area to attend the University of Iowa in Iowa City, which is where she met her husband, Pete, she felt the calling to come back to her hometown. They moved to Ames in 2015 and are the owners of Express Employment Professionals in Ames.

Did you ever see yourself returning to Ames?
I never really expected to move back to Ames after college, and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to convince my husband, Pete, who played football for the University of Iowa, to live in “enemy territory.” But I can honestly say that not a day goes by where we aren’t grateful for our decision to live here. We love it in Ames so much.
What does this region offer that makes it a unique place to live?
Ames is such a special place. It has that comforting small-town feeling where it seems like you know everyone. My dad opened his endodontist practice here 43 years ago, and now, my brother, Jon, has taken it over. Two of my best friends from preschool also own businesses here. It’s an amazing community for owning a business, raising a family – Ames Community School District has been incredible for us – and enjoying life.
What are your favorite spots for outdoor recreation?
We’re so fortunate to have Seven Oaks for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing in the community. I grew up skiing in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and we’ve turned our kids into ski and snowboard lovers, too. Ada Hayden Heritage Park is another favorite. There’s nothing better than walking the path while my 12-year-old son fishes. And Moore Park is perfect for long walks with our Bernese mountain dog, Vinny.
What do you enjoy most about downtown Ames?
When people ask me what to do in Ames, I always recommend a visit to Main Street. We have the cutest downtown with fantastic shopping. It’s an experience in itself! I love strolling both sides of the street, stopping at Cafe Diem or Marmalade Moon for a coffee, and spending hours at Dog-Eared Books, the best bookstore in the world.
What would be your tip for newcomers who just moved to the Ames area?
My advice for newcomers is to meet as many people and visit as many places as you can. Our community truly wants everyone to feel at home, and I’m confident you will find something here that will make you love Ames just as much as we do.
