Many entrepreneurs can tell you they choose to plant their roots in the Midwest because of the down-to-earth attitude, exceptional work ethic and affordable cost of living.

In Iowa, there is also the more abstract notion of “Iowa-nice,” which manifests in an openness to strangers and visitors. But what makes these ideas tangible, and what does the support network look like to sustain these values?

For one thing, there is a strong philanthropic drive among businesses in Cedar Rapids, IA, many of which believe the world can be made a better place through human effort, including GreatAmerica Financial Services Corporation.

The benefits of a strong and thriving community are not lost among business leaders who want a healthy and engaged recruitment base for their operations.

“We all win when the community supports business and business supports community,” says GreatAmerica Financial Services Corporation CEO Martin Golobic.

In 2022, a new twist appeared on the local philanthropic scene in Cedar Rapids. GreatAmerica Financial Services Corporation doubled its annual giving to the community by creating a fund that is purely employee-advised.

Nonprofits in the Cedar Rapids area must have a recommendation from a GreatAmerica employee to apply to the Employee Advised Fund. After all applications are submitted within the application window, the slate  is presented to all employees for their votes.

“Our intention with the fund is to continuously engage our employees with community giving and focus on awareness around the needs that exist,” Golobic says. “It’s a valuable quality-of-life connection we can make and support.”

“Before we even started the fund, there was already a rich history of GreatAmericans giving to their community through organized food and gift drives, volunteerism and board service,” Golobic continues. “The fund is a further opportunity  to learn about our team members’ perspectives based on their personal experiences.”

In 2023, GreatAmerica will give $1.1 million to the community, with $500k directed to nonprofits chosen by GreatAmerica employees.
