Foundation Director: Why the Future Is Bright for Council Bluffs Public Schools

Bridgette Watson, recently appointed executive director of the Council Bluffs Schools Foundation Board of Directors, knows a thing or two about the advantages the Council Bluffs public schools — which serves some 9,000 students in 15 schools in Council Bluffs, IA — offers students and their families.

She attended Council Bluffs Community Schools herself and has three children currently enrolled in district schools. She also served as the foundation’s director of development for the past five years.

Read on to learn more about Watson, her new role and the future she sees for Council Bluffs public schools.

How did you come to your new role? And what do you enjoy most about the job?

I came from higher education, where I saw firsthand how education opens doors. When I was invited to apply for the foundation’s development director role, I was both thrilled and nervous, but mostly thrilled.

I love this district. As an Abraham Lincoln High School graduate and now a parent of kids in the district, I have so much pride in our schools. Getting to support them through the foundation is incredibly rewarding.

What are some of your goals for the foundation?

At our core, we exist to support the schools, whether that’s through funding gaps or providing opportunities for students and families. Moving forward, we’re focusing on expanding and strengthening our programs, especially before- and after-school care, to make sure every child who needs it has access.

Are there any specific initiatives or programs you’re focusing on?

Kids & Company, our before- and after-school care program, is our biggest initiative. It’s the largest child care operation in southwest Iowa, serving 800 kids a year.

Child care is a huge challenge for working families, and by ensuring kids have a safe, supportive place to be, we’re also helping parents stay in the workforce. Strengthening this program will have a ripple effect, allowing us to support even more initiatives across the district.

What makes Council Bluffs Community Schools a great choice for students and their families?

Our schools are inclusive. We welcome and support all kids, no matter their background or abilities. The opportunities here are incredible, both in and out of the classroom.

Schools today do more than ever to support students and families, and I love that our district rises to that challenge every day.

How did your public school education help you get to where you are now?

I’m a proud Abraham Lincoln grad, and my public school experience shaped who I am. It gave me opportunities, lifelong connections and a deep appreciation for the role schools play in a community.

What do you love most about living and working in Council Bluffs?

The people. This is such a strong, supportive community, and I’m grateful for the many people who have helped me along the way. I’m proud to live here, work here and give back to the place that shaped me.
