When is the last time you turned it all off? The constant buzzing of the cell phone, the hum of the evening commute, the chatter of co-workers in the background, the to-dos that never seem to go away.
As stimulus drives our society, it may be difficult to think of what may happen in a stimulus-free environment.
“Our space is designed to free one of the gravities of the outside world,” says Shawnee Powers, owner and founder of Float Magic, located in the heart of the warehouse district, in downtown Twin Falls, ID. “The intention of our entire space is to allow our clients to step out of their daily stressors and into a sanctuary.”
Floatation therapy, also known as R.E.S.T. (Restricted Environmental Stimuli Therapy) is the main draw at Float Magic. It includes the use of a floatation tank filled with 200 gallons of water and over 1,200 pounds of Epsom salts so that the body floats effortlessly.
Light and sound are restricted, and the water is heated to the body’s external temperature. When immersed in this solution, the body – alongside the mind – opens.
“The effects of gravity are removed, allowing joints to loosen and the spine to decompress,” Powers says. “This can be a huge benefit for physical pain while increasing range of motion.”
The restriction of stimuli offers a way to tune out noise from everyday life and reflect inward, causing homeostasis for our autonomic nervous system.
Once inside the Float Magic facility, there are other alluring options including an infrared sauna, traditional sauna accompanied by a 47-degree plunge tank, massage chairs, a NovoTHOR whole-body light pod and a Himalayan salt cave. Outside is a Zen garden with ample space for private or public gatherings.
