Peoria
Population: 113,400
Whether you’re taking advantage of entertainment opportunities, like watching the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park or taking the kids to Gwynn Family Aquatic Center, there’s no shortage of excitement in Peoria, IL. Take in a show at Peoria Civic Center or explore the Peoria Riverfront Museum, the only multidisciplinary museum of its kind in the nation.
Glen Oak Park is another fantastic destination. It’s home to the Peoria PlayHouse Children’s Museum, the Peoria Zoo, a botanical garden and a playground. And if outdoor recreation is more your speed, Rocky Glen Park and the historic Grand View Drive offer gorgeous scenic views.
East Peoria
Population: 22,500
Just across the bridge from downtown Peoria, East Peoria is a smaller community with its own share of appealing amenities. The residents of this city can enjoy the beautiful East Peoria Riverfront Park, which offers great views and a well-maintained trail. From that same riverfront, people on both sides of the river get to enjoy the annual Red White & BOOM! event, the largest Fourth of July fireworks show in Illinois. East Peoria is also home to Fon du Lac Golf Course, which is great for novice and experienced players.
Peoria Heights
Population: 5,800
Just north of Peoria, the village of Peoria Heights is a retail destination.
“When you’re in Peoria Heights, you can go boutique shopping, dine at small-business restaurants and basically get everything you want all in one spot,” says J.D. Dalfonso, president and CEO of Discover Peoria.
Must-visit boutiques include the Perfect Pear and So Chic, along with Sage & Co. and GoldenFinch Boutique.
Also, be sure to stop by Fired Up to paint a piece of pottery and even shop for groceries at Alwan & Sons Meat Co., a small butcher shop and grocery. Another must on the shopping list is Olio & Vino, where you can buy premium extra virgin olive oils from around the world.
Eureka
Population: 5,100
Home to Eureka College, this community is a college town, with its biggest alum being former President Ronald Reagan. His legacy is on full display at the Ronald Reagan Museum, which is worth visiting. The city is also home to the annual Ledgestone Open, one of the largest disc golf tournaments in the world. If you’re looking for good eats and drinks, be sure to visit Wendy Puff, a Neapolitan pizzeria and pub, or venture over to Faire Coffee.
“Eureka is a quintessential small town that marries friendliness with neighbors at every turn,” Dalfonso says.
Pekin
Population: 31,800
Known as the Marigold Capital of the World, Pekin is a place where natural beauty is easy to find, especially at the annual Pekin Marigold Festival or places like Mineral Springs Park. Also located in Mineral Springs Park is Veterans Memorial Arena, an almost 35,000-square-foot facility that includes an ice arena, a gym and a dance studio, making it the epicenter for recreation. There are also some fantastic shopping spots in Pekin, like Curvy Chic Boutique and Kountry Nook Gift & Craft Mall.
Morton
Population: 16,500
The village of Morton is an ideal place to raise a family.
“When you talk about a strong school district and small-town destination, you have the heart of America in Morton,” Dalfonso says.
Morton Community Unit School District 709 ranks in the top 10% of the state. Morton also has some excellent food and drink establishments, like the charming Eli’s Coffee Shop, Four30 Scones and The 208 House, which serves traditional and elevated fare.
Washington
Population: 15,900
Washington is an active community that loves to gather for events and support local businesses.
“It’s a great place to slow down and savor the finer things,” Dalfonso says. “It’s a city that has common amenities but also a thriving local business scene.”
Lindy’s Downtown Market, Tangled Roots Craft Beer & Kitchen and The Blend are just a few local favorites.
People gather to support good causes, like the Kevin Brown Memorial Tournament of Champions, while finding joy in seasonal celebrations like the annual Autumn Fest.
