It’s easy to be a busy body in East Central Indiana, thanks to numerous recreational opportunities and venues. The region has many trails, waterways and parks. Here is some background:

Cardinal Greenways

Spanning from Marion through Muncie to Richmond is Cardinal Greenways, a 62-mile bicycle, hiking and horseback riding trail with scenic amenities like farms, rivers, woodlands and Emerald Lake. Along the way are the quaint communities of Blountsville, Economy, Gas City, Jonesboro, Losantville, Webster and Williamsburg.

Mounds State Park

Off Interstate 69 on the east side of Anderson in Madison County is Mounds State Park, where visitors can see 10 earthwork mounds constructed by prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 160 B.C. The park today has a nature center with a wildlife viewing room, animal displays and interactive games. Naturalist-led hikes are provided every weekend throughout the year. Other attractions include fishing on the White River, campsites, picnic shelters, a swimming pool and hiking trails that range from easy to rugged.

New Castle Motorsports Park

An advanced go-karting facility, New Castle Motorsports Park provides a 1-mile and quarter-mile road course with different layouts. NCMP is home to the Kart Racers of America, which stages about 15 major races a year. On the grounds is a kart rental shop, trackside restaurant and a Champions Club with TVs and a wet bar for corporate events and private parties.

Summit Lake State Park

In Henry County, Summit Lake State Park is ideal for watching birds and other wildlife. The 2,680-acre destination includes a large lake, 125 electricity-equipped campsites, three boat ramps and a beach bathhouse. Migratory bird species include bald eagles, sandhill cranes and osprey. Zeigler Woods in the southwest corner of the park is a designated nature preserve with abundant flora and fauna.

Portland Water Park and Marion Splash House

The newly renovated Portland Water Park has two 20-foot water slides, a 60-gallon dump bucket, lazy river, lily pad walk, swim lanes and a concession stand. The park also offers swimming and water aerobics classes as well as party rental opportunities. Meanwhile, the Marion Splash House is also a waterpark with a lazy river, wave pool, Kid Zone, waterslides and cabana rentals.

Prairie Creek Reservoir

Southeast of Muncie and just south of the White River is Prairie Creek Reservoir, a beautiful recreation spot with fishing, camping, boating, beach amenities, water sports, hiking, biking, ATVs and horse trails. Prairie Creek also has cabins, campsites, shelters and piers available for rent.
